China just amazes me with their information control - or in this case lack of information control. It's like in World War Z, where the Chinese government kept trying to keep a lid on the bizarre outbreaks of teh walking dead.

@tamoko: It's nuts. I honestly don't understand how the Chinese citizenry stands for it. (I mean, at least in the U.S. you have to give lip service to free speech when you're suppressing information, and for all the jokes and complaints about the Bush administration, I don't think this kind of thing would happen here.) I guess it's genuinely of those cultural differences that transcends simple understanding.

@Moff: @Silver_Back: I see it as partially a result of the the level of social conformity that historically exists in Asian cultures. It's also the weord group think that has uniquely within China, a very successful and compartmentalized hybrid of capitalist "muscle" fueling the economy and authoritatrian communist "brains" nudging and tweaking the 'muscles' below for their own golas and propaganda purposes... Wow! I sound like one of those talking heads on Sunday mornings... Time to go out, get a drink and play some Dead Rising in honor of our Chinese undead brotherean. Cheers!

this is some scary shit right here...

i think its a real @$$h0le thing for the school to be taking the internet down. i mean, what are they thinking? that by nobody hearing a thing about it that the world will assume everything is okay?

i think when you are dealing with issues like this that the internet is the last safety net. should everything else fail, people need to communicate with each other over wide distances using things like twitter and other social networking sites to stay in contact and to stay as organized and informed as possible.

@Boas_MC: Yeah, I think the food and water thing is much worse. Apparently the net has only been down for about a day -- obviously, it was up long enough that the blogger was able to get her information out to the world.

@jrghoull: Removing the internet was an effort to stop information form getting out about the situation. China does not need a panic, China wants to maintain the political goodwill it garnered from the Olympics. A horrible quarantine situation like this, with the food shortages is not a story they want to get out.
