Wow, those "Peace on Earth" cartoons are FASCINATING.

I find it very interesting that in both versions, the animals become completely anthropomorphized after the age of man, rather than reappropriating mankind's remains in an animal-y sort of way. Does this imply that the animals would eventually begin behaving the same as the humans did? Or is destruction inherent not in human(-style) society, but only in humans themselves (in an original sin sort of way?).

Also, note the years. 1939 and 1955. So the 1939 cartoon must have been made by isolationists - communists perhaps? Note that the 1939 version alters the carol's lyrics to avoid reference to God, whereas the 1955 remake not only uses the traditional lyrics, but finishes with a shot of a (broken) stained glass cruxifix and a shining star.

And um... I have more notes. God I wish I still had an excuse to write term papers.

that "Peace on Earth" is powerful stuff. to think there hadn't been any thermonuclear war up to that point.

Or then again, the quote might be:-

Mourn not for us, for we have known the light,
Have looked on beauty, have lived in peace and love,
Grieve but for those who go alone, unwise,
To die in darkness, never having see the Sun

I always remember one bit from the Twilight Zone episode, the small poem the race that knew it was going to die left:-

    Mourn not for us
    We have looked on beauty
Have lived in peace and loved
Mourn for those who live in darkness
    And never see the sun.

Or at least thats what I remember of it from a couple of decades ago, anyone care to correct me?

@spookcountry: Huh, don't know that episode, but what you quoted reminds me of this bit from Oliver Wendell Holmes' "The Voiceless."

Nay, grieve not for the dead alone

Whose song has told their hearts' sad story,--

Weep for the voiceless, who have known

The cross without the crown of glory!

Check out the story "And When They Appear" in Gene Wolfe's Strange Travellers.

A little boy named Shelby has been orphaned by the violent aftermath of a huge societal breakdown of some sort. He is cared for by his family AI controlled house that throws a Christmas party for him replete with holographic holiday characters even as mob of looters approaches.

That Simmons story is seriously disturbing.

Of course, he would take that as a compliment.

My favorite part of this special is that it actually changed the He-man story. His mom the queen of Eternia knows about Earth because, get this, she was an astronaut from Earth. That's right He-man is half Earthling!

Just in case anyone's interested, She-Ra eventually married Skeletor, who after much counseling overcame the shame and humiliation he endured as a child for having no face. He is now the manager of the Bed, Bath & Beyond at Eternia Mall.

And He-Man actually became a bit of a dick. After King Randor past away, Adam ascended to the throne and passed quite a few tithes on the citizens of Eternia in order to build a new Castle Grayskull with modern plumbing and heating. He is divorced from Teela and shares custody of their two children.

Now I have an image of Cringer draped in tinsel lapping up eggnog. Awwww.

You right-thinking Xtian kids got all the good stuff. Being a no-good heathen mud-person all I ever got were used, chewed-on Micronauts and many lumps of coal, which were welcome as it kept our hovel warm during the bitter Maine winters. I only had one (1!) real Star Wars toy during my entire 25-year childhood, an IG-88 action figure. I told myself he was my favorite anyways and cried myself to sleep on a pile of wood chips and my old man's beer bottles.

    Sweet, sweet Holiday Memories.

@Grey_Area: I always enjoyed the Micronauts comic book from Marvel. It seemed to have an awful lot of nudity and quasi-nudity for a series based on a line of children's toys.

I'd nearly forgotten about this abomination! I remember it being cheesy and completely nonsensical even by He-Man standards (and that takes a lot).

This needs to be RiffTraxed even more than the Star Wars Holiday special!

I've always loved the fact that Masters of the Universe began as a toy line for the first Conan movie, but Mattel freaked out after seeing a rough cut of the film, dumped the license, and repurposed the molds for a more wholesome original IP. In some adjacent parallel universe, Moff awoke to find not Castle Greyskull, but Thulsa Doom's Cannibal Orgy Snake Chamber.
