This looks overstylized and awful. What a disappointment. The books had so much promise to do something really groundbreaking on film, and these just look campy, tired, faux-epic, and predictable.

They should make a 24-style show, but with vampire zombies!! Apocalypse in real time, that's what turns people on.

it seems like every pitch to fox execs inevitably ends with them requesting it be rewritten as a comedy.

This was really a pretty poor novel. Some of the folklorish flashback bits (obviously Del Toro's) were all right, but the plot was tired and the characters flat. No desire to read two more books or watch a TV show.

For all the marketing push it got, I don't think the book has sold terribly well either...

It was certainly a decent read, but like @geeky_reader, it didn't live up to my expectations. Del Toro's movies show a really unique aesthetic which doesn't show up quite so much in the novel. It is, however, a good antidote to sparkly and/or angst-ridden vampire stories, though. Not sure I'll read the next two books.

@smirkette: currently the list of authors i think could bring del toro's aesthetic to life with mere words is one name long: China MiƩville.

Don't throw things, please, but I didn't get more than 50 pages into the book before I gave up.

I found his writing style too heavy-handed - spelling things out for my in GIANT lettering: "knew something in there wanted to eat her" or "souls. we used to call them souls". After about a dozen of these I went on to a Greg Bear.

That said, would I watch a movie or tv show based on the books? Yes, of course. Now that I reflect, maybe my fault with the book was that it was too cinematic and written with the thought of how it would look rather than how it'd feel.

@Julius Seizure. (the CANUCK one): It's basically The Da Vinci Code with vampires. Once I thought of it that way, I turned my brain off and enjoyed the ride.

I liked The Strain, but only liked. I'll read the next 2 simply out of curiousity. I don't know, I guess I was just expecting more. To feel wowed, scared, to be creeped out as soon as I turned off the lights for bedtime. None of that really happened.

I often really get into a book, to the point where my soul is invested. Sadly, it didn't happen with The Strain.

@FakingThroughLife: I'm sure there was a scene where a woman killed her former abusive husband in the attic. There was a pretty detailed description of the parasite crawling up her leg and entering her body via the rectum.

I like the reviews here, too. If I want to know what Tor is putting out then I can look at the Tor website, or at the sci-fi section at the borders down the street. There's no good independent bookstore in town here for sci-fi, so all I see on the big book chain shelves are novels by Bujold--who I like, don't get me wrong--and Mcaffery and stack upon stack of awful licensed books. I'm more interested in reading about books I might not find on my own and in new editions of works by older writers that I might not see sitting on the shelf of a book store (Jack Vance, here I come).

David Hartwell's Year's Best SF 14 is even better than Dozois' anthologies...

@secretmission: Nope, wrong. All the best stories of the year are repeated in both anthologies, but Hartwell's unique picks are uniformly sub-par. Plus Dozois has more bang for your buck, more stories equals more enjoyment

I actually enjoy the way you guys do reviews because book specific sites and forums have always held tons of references for the less "arty" stuff. This site turns me on to stuff I wouldn't normally find that would fall through the cracks, and maybe I am just in tune with your style of hipster sci-fi lit, but your choices seem spot on to me.

The Strain sounds an awful lot like Scott Westerfeld's Peeps, with vampirism portrayed as a parisitic disease that threatens civilization.
