A rather optimistic map of America's (future) high-speed rail network.

@Nick Denton: "Optimistic" is a generous term. Here in CA, we have been talking about that SoCal to Norcal (and also the Vegas linkage) for upwards of a decade. What has been done? One ballot initiative Prop 1A (2008), which barely passed at 52.6%.

Cost, for dedicated rail space, is one of the greatest hurdles. If a line has to share railspace with Amtrak, local metros, and the freight lines, there is almost no point in a "high-speed" line. Dedicated rail lines are the key, and there simply is funding for it, even if there should be funding. The $9.95 billion in bonds issued from 1A covers only part of the cost of the San Francisco - Anaheim planned route, which utilizes some shared lines. Whether the high-speed line has priority, remains to be seen.

Estimates of a 2030 completion date for San Francisco - Anaheim planned route seem "optimistic."

It would make road trips to io9 SF events so much quicker/easier/relaxing though. I am glad that at least some work is being done.
