In reply to Scientists Erase Painful Memories Without Drugs
Seems a bit counterproductive to me.

My painful memories are life lessons and changes (for the better) to my persona not that I want to go through them AGAIN.

What's the damn point in learning/living if you don't deal with the emotional pain of your screwups and learn from your mistakes?

@ManchuCandidate: that begs the question do you have to deal with extensive emotional pain to learn from your mistakes.

    @tetracycloide:

I think so. Emotional pain is a symptom not the cause of deeper issues.

I know more than a few folks who can't face their real problems because they want to avoid the pain of actually facing up to their problems/mistakes/who they really are.

@ManchuCandidate: the fact that it's a symptom, not the cause, is really my point. with physical pain relating to a physical problem it's entirely possible to mask or remove the pain with the proper application of pain-killers to make the process of dealing with the cause easier. it's not a huge leap in logic to suggest that dealing with the deeper issues would be easier without simultaneously having to deal with the emotional pain.

in point of fact, denial and booze were not methods for hiding from pain they were methods to hide from the problem by pretending it didn't exist and killing brain cells respectively. there's a huge difference between self medicating with delusions and alcohol and psychotherapeutic techniques like removing a pavlovian response to a special song or place.

pain is necessary because it tells us when something is wrong, physically or emotionally, but once the problem has be properly diagnosed the pain is no longer necessary.

    Fail io9. Total headline fail.

At first I wanted to call bullshit on the study, but the study itself makes no such outrageous claims as suggested by the headline: "Scientist Discovers Most Important Difference Between Men and Women"

Really, the study just says that when dealing with white folks, people use skin tone to help identify gender.

That is orders of magnitude off from what this io9 article is suggesting.

I guess nobody can tell the gender of non-white people.

    Fail.

Not bad. But you should have worded it where you're the center of focus, thus making the comment funnier. Example: "Finally, a scientific explanation for why I find green women aliens so hot."

@thewriteguy: adding in gender confusion would have been an improvement as well as in: "Finally, a scientific eplanation for why I find green male aliens so hot."

This information could also be used in face-recognition software!

Of course, now that we know it, it could easily be used to bamboozle face-recognition software, if a person were some kind of criminal, who was trying to get away with something.

    Hmmmm.
