I have to admit that, by the end, I *almost* wanted Andy to stay as sheriff.
They *have* to bring Andy back in later episodes. It will be a lot of fun to see him doing something other than being the sheriff, but keeping the same cool and funny disposition.
Oh... almost forgot. There's a piece of dialogue that I didn't catch. What did Allison say when Andy asked why Carter was risking his life?
I believe what Andy actually said was: "Why is he doing this? It's not his job"
And then Allison said something but I didn't catch it, even on repeat viewings.
i didnot read the post as i didnot want to see a spoiler but i did want to say i like this show.
i go on vacation for the next few weeks and i am bringing my eurekas to watch and catchup while my friends i am visiting are at work.
when i come back i will watch these new episodes.hope the show is worth the extra wait they did on us.
Charlie, I know two episodes isn't really representative of the rest of the season, but do they have any of those really annoying Degree type things worked into the show?
Andy doesn't have GM tattooed all over him does he?
If science is the dispassionate pursuit of objective truth, then it stands to reason that mad science is the completely irrational pursuit of a nutty project that the rest of the world will never truly understand.
huh. I just got an email from SyFy reminding me with a big ad that this is back tonight and Nathan Stark is featured rather prominently for a dead character.
While I suppose you could reduce Eureka to a show about law enforcement, that is not why it appeals to me.
For me the show is about good comic science fiction, a genre that requires a deftness and sense of fun that is difficult to sustain.
Good science fiction requires a certain amount of gravitas. Otherwise, how can you say, " ahead warp factor three" with a straight face. That same gravitas can hamstring the genre. It is always a delight when some one can shake some laughs out of the technobabble.
Jack is the benevolent hand that keeps things in line. In comedy parlance, he is the "white clown,' the sustainer of order and status quo. Most white clowns are not so likable.
Eureka is populated with "red clowns," the wacko bozos with no self restraint whose penchant for mischief drives the "white clown" crazy.
Eureka is not about law enforcement. It is about the wackiness of science and the all too human calamities of playing with the Universe without reading the directions.
( I know- what directions?)
It is flimsiest of excuses to send up the scientific community and the laws of physics at the same time.
And best of all, it is a place I wish I could live, disasters and all. I would be happy to sit around the Cafe Deim sipping coffee and watching the locals.
@hellers1155: First off, kudos to not just having a small, pointless comment about "YAY! EUREKA'S BACK!", though it would be accepted, cause, really, we're all thinking "OMGOMGOMG EUREKA'S BACK!"
Ahem. Getting off topic.
Anyway, you do bring up a good point. This show is something different, and reminds us why we love sci-fi again. Not all futuristic or sci-fi shows need dirt and grime everywhere, nor does it need a heavy dramatic plot.
I'm glad that the new/continuing season hasn't changed (much) in the way of heavy drama. It seems to still be the lovable comedy-sci-fi show that made my mother love watching Jack's antics, and ask me, "When's the next episode coming?"
And getting my 50+ year old mother getting excited about anything that I like is pretty dramatic.
Again, thanks for that new look at Eureka with the comedy parlance. I never thought of it that way. I think io9 renews my faith in humanity, in that it's no longer just, "FIRST!" or other ridiculous things. Kinda like Reddit, except things like this (actual conversations with insight) happen more often.
I've spent the past week catching up on the past 30 or so episodes. It's easily one of my favorite shows of all time: its mix of lighthearted humor, intelligent writing, and general geek wish fulfillment make for a show that's way too good for SyFy. Let's hope that NBC doesn't realize that last fact; if they were to put it up against Lost next spring I honestly don't know which one I would choose.
Everyone who reads io9 should be watching this show. Trust me.
I wonder what they are really planning with Henry. First he was the all knowing troubleshooter, then for a while he was sorta the big-bad, now what is he? Is he really reformed? Is he back to first season? Or is he a new character all together?
Hmmm, as much as I have a soft spot for Eureka, the 'twists' are usually spottable from the first few minutes. If they've gotten over that hump then I can't really complain all that much (except bring back Nathan Stark and Earth2 lady, Deborah Farantino).
I'm very upset that I will be at a baseball game tonight and unable to watch this when it airs. But, that's why we have things like DVRs and the internet, right?
Either way, Eureka is one of the best shows on television and if "Syfy" hasn't killed it by putting it on Friday nights, could continue for as long as the writers have imagination and love of the show. I think it's fairly obvious that everyone involved with Eureka really enjoys working on it. And that dynamic is what makes watching the show worthwhile.
@t7bros: I'm not too concerned with the whole "friday night death slot" thing when it comes to cable. The SyFy heads know that they don't really have a chance of grabbing much of the big three's audience; in fact, by putting a show that's actually quite John Q. Public friendly up at the same time the other networks put up less compelling programming there's a damn good chance of getting great (for SyFy) ratings. If you were stuck at home on a Friday night, which would you rather watch: reruns of According to Jim or a fun, inventive and compelling science fiction show? Eureka's gonna do fine.
