Lawrence Fishburne's makes me feel like I'm meeting my girlfriend's father for the first time and I accidentally dinged his prize mustang on the way in.

Proof that every cloud has a silver lining -- sure, the world economy's screwed, but at least Dubai will stop polluting and exploiting so much.

Well, at least when the entire civilization of the planet is wiped out and aliens find the concept art of our architecture, they will at least think we were pretty awesome.

I want only to live long enough to see Dubai in 100 years...when there is no oil and the desert takes it's own back.

@goldfarb: 100 years? Try 10. 20 tops. Just look at sections of Detroit, overgrown with weeds and trees or the towns around Chernobyl, reduced to ruins in just two decades. Dubai, as said, is just desert. A few good-sized sandstorms would scour that place from the face of the Earth in just a few years.

A bit of a shame. The epic projects they had going were cool looking, especially the peninsulas (Palm Jamirah) and 'the world' islands. Been a while since things on that scale were built. At least on your planet.

    "Bubbles are natural occurrences"

I'm not sure that's true. In my admittedly non-professional opinion, bubbles wouldn't occur with moderation in place.

Having said that, I agree that diversification allows people and institutions to adapt more quickly to the ups and downs of the market.

@Roklimber: bubbles aren't just natural, they're necessary. when a new product or service enters the market how does anyone know what it costs? bubbles are the logical conclusion to a product gradually increasing in price over time as people begin to reguard it as increasingly valuable. once the trend starts it's difficult to get the price to come back down again. how does the market know when to stop rasing the price and keep it steady? it doesn't it just keeps climbing past equlibrium and to the lags inherient in the system doesn't get price corrected until it's significantly overvalued i.e. a bubble.

the obnoxious thing about it is that, because of generational differences and human psychology, this happens with a lot of products that aren't new. credit markets have gone through this cycle every 30ish years like clockwork with occasional smaller bubbles poping inbetween the really big ones.
