We're all quick to deplore pretensions of authenticity when they appear on Stuff White People Like or Boingboing or wherever, and to resort to cod-deconstructionism whenever a middle-aged person expresses doubt about one of our pet fancies, but we ought to put a bit more work into policing ourselves.

The words that seemed perfect on the page sound really awkward and forced, even with actors clearly trying to make it work. I would approach The Spirit the way that I did Revenge of the Sith - I turned the volume down, and watched this beautiful painting move. I just couldn't stand to hear it talk.

At the risk of indulging in some Frank Miller-ing myself, his movies are pretty until his characters open their mouths.

I simply wait to discover Eva Mendes used an ass-double to ruin the only redeeming moment in the whole mess. As for the dragged out payoff for the Huevos Rancheros gag, 10 minutes past when it would have actually been funny.

Macht was quite likable, as it goes, this could be career poison though.
