I agree with CJ's review, for the most part. The fun lies in the banter and the details, but it got too metaphysical at points when it came to the main plot which derailed the playful tone of the rest of the novel.

The only point where I disagree is the one reading session length. I had to go to the bathroom in the middle, therefore it took me two sessions.

I love io9 so much more right now. An article title referencing an Oingo Boingo song, legends.

Huh. That over-arching plot reminds of the other Martinez book I read. Uhm. Ogre Company? Orc...troll...shit...

In the Company of Ogres. That's the one.

@braak: Hahah, why did I put all those ellipses in while I was trying to think of the name, instead of just thinking of the name and then typing it? I don't know. I guess I wanted to give you guys the full experience of my thought processes.

There's a number on the back of the book you can call, 212-364-1177, for the monster service. It actually plays a message, if anyone wants a little flavor. :-)

You get just enough of the weird workings of this magical universe to keep it intriguing - magic is everywhere, but most humans are "incognizants" or, if they're lucky, "light incognizants," who can just barely perceive magic but can't remember it. It's as if we're the butt of a great cosmic joke.

Sounds like Bleach. Speaking of which...I can't wait for the new one (hopefully) tonight!

It also reminds me of The Dresden Files and...<sniff>...The Middleman.
