    I've been kind of skeptical of the efficacy of this technique since I heard of it. I don't doubt that you can tell some things about a the objects or the space you're in by listening to echoes, but some of the things that these people are rumored to be able to do using solely this method seem overblown.

    Maybe I'm just not doing it right.

    @Daumier: I wouldn't be surprized that if you learn it when you're quite young, and don't have working eyesight to distract you, the brain could re-task itself to process auditory information in a more visual way--perhaps even utilizing the otherwise useless visual cortex.

    So, I wouldn't be surprised if these kids can, in a way, "see" with sound. It's probably a tiny fraction of what a bat or a dolphin can do, but it's not hard to believe that the technique is quite effective with practice.

    Why so skeptical?
    I watched a report on a teenager in America who uses this technique too.
    I saw him running down a crowded hallway at his school and around a corner, dodging other kids.
    Out in the open, walking past cars, he could tell where all the cars were and where the gaps were. This, with all the other noise going on.

    @Anekanta: Yup, just try looking up the documentary of Ben Underwood, a guy who actually taught himself echolocation all by himself.

    Having seen him rollerblading down the street full tilt despite being completely blind was pretty cool.
