@Daveinva: "Something tells me the scientists need to get together to figure out this whole "universe is expanding/contracting" thing once and for all."
Of course cosmologists have been working on this problem, without letup, ever since Hubble and Humason discovered the universe is expanding in 1923. Since then an enormous amount of new physics has been discovered and zillions of cosmological models have been proposed and discarded. Those two you cite are just the latest attempts.
Obviously both can't be right, and we're gonna work to find out which it is. Perhaps both are wrong. That's how science works.
Don't really understand the problem you have with this.
@Daveinva: There's not necessarily a conflict, as the "Big Bounce" was speculation as to how the Universe came about, and not how it will end, although the logical implication was that if we contracted "again," that the same thing would happen.
Oh, and the Global Warming people and the Global Cooling people are the same people, just on different days. That hot cocoa sounds good though!
Is this one of the end-universe scenarios where everything is destroyed only to be brought back into existance again? The cosmic reset button end scenario? Or is it the total oblviion and nothing comes back again scenario?
@0kami: If you're thinking of something like Poincare's Recurrence, that's unlikely given that the volume is constantly expanding. In an expanding volume Brownian motion is insufficient reverse entropy.

Not a week ago, IO9 ran *this* story:

Then you run this one.
Obviously, they *both* can't be true, right?
Something tells me the scientists need to get together to figure out this whole "universe is expanding/contracting" thing once and for all.
My guess is that'll happen right after the global warming/global cooling people have hot cocoa together.

Screw that. I'm going to vandalize puppies, kick shopfronts, and stop paying my children!
Mass hysteria!

@ldevitt: I only kick puppies every day. Child terror is for the weekends.
