I'm laughing at the negative comments here. But in a good way.

It shows that some men CAN retain their critical faculties even when confronted with norks.

It's a much longer movie than 300. The comparison is asinine. It completely looks beyond several important factors.

It did well. How many other movies debuted with a $25M opening day take this year?

Why are comic fans so annoying about stuff like this? Not everything has to be a $1 Billion dollar movie like The Dark Knight, or a freak like 300 was.

I would say Watchmen is a much riskier movie for the average moviegoer than 300 was.. I mean, 300 was basically just an action movie. People flock to those. Watchmen is a superhero movie featuring characters non-comic fans have NEVER heard of, set in an alternate world, and running at almost 2 hours and 45 minutes..

It did just fine for it's opening day.

@KSChris: So you're saying it did less well than a movie that's shorter and features more well-known characters? In other words, a smart studio will, in future, try to make shorter movies, and only make movies about Batman and Spider-Man.

@Charlie Jane Anders: I can see it now Batman vs Spiderman VII: The Againenizing.

300 really was a sure-fire winner because of all the well-known characters. Who amongst us didn't have a King Leonidias lunchbox growing up? I do think the boffins at Warner/DC are probably having cold feet about Supermax and the Suicide Squad project.

Well, they can always go back to cop-buddy movies. Those never get old!

    Disappoints whom?

Honestly, why does anyone except the producers care how much money a movie makes on its opening weekend -- or across its entire run? Who cares how much it makes compared to any other movie? It isn't a competition. There are no medals for what makes the most money at the box office.

The only thing that matters -- at all -- is whether the people watching the movie enjoy it and appreciate it. If yes, then the movie is a success, even if it doesn't make back the money it cost to make it. If not, then it doesn't matter how much money it makes over its entire existence.

@Lamar Henderson: I think if Watchmen fails to break even or make a significant profit, the chances of "edgy" or risky superhero movies getting made in the future go down considerably.

@FallonCadonkadonk: For a big budget movie like this, it has to do significantly better in its opening weekend, especially if it has a huge second weekend drop off, as many expect.

Word of mouth about large blue "units" is what will keep the numbers down. My wife was psych'd to see it until she got a better idea of what would be on the screen. Now its going to be a DVD at best.

@DEK46656: What is it, exactly, about nakedness in ART that scares perfectly normal people, anyway? Is it an american thing?

(No disrespect meant, honest, I'm just trying to understand. Because I can't imagine any other western country selling little statues of Venus de Milo with the breasts covered... So where does it come from? Religion? Custom? Education?)

What I wonder about is DEK's wife -- she DOESN'T want to see a giant wang? What's wrong with her? :D

I might have a little to do with this. I've been telling people to read the comic before they see the movie. Oh, and telling them that the movie will likely be crap compared to the comic. My sister couldn't wait to see the movie, but then I placed the comic in her hand. Now? Not so much.

    I win...sort of.
