I kinda liked the movie. I mean, it could have been weirder... it was a bit subtle - but still, kinda liked. Just a little.
Of course, it was the end of a 3-week binge. I'd never watched the x-files, and about 6 months after the movie came out I got the DVD's from Amazon and watched from episode 1 all the way through. So I might have been a little bit off my rocker at that point. #xfiles
the last one was differant, but i was okay with it. i got what they were trying to do, and while it was satisfying for the characters, i agree that it was a bit of a cop out 'x-files' wise.
as for a next one, i'm down! i think they could keep poppin out these babies and random points for a long long time. #xfiles
I'm still upset with DD for forcing the show to leave BC, making disparaging comments about Vancouver and then leaving the show. Petty I know but I hold a grudge. #xfiles
@it must be bunnies: Yeah... I had a hard time getting that out of my head whilst watching. That and the whole "David Duchovny is a druggie sex maniac" thing were tough to shut down whilst watching the show. #xfiles
(Careening wildly off topic, desperately trying to bring the comment editor under control, failing, AAAIIIIEEEEEEE...)
Instead of devoting resources to yet another X-FILES movie (not that I wasn't a devoted fan of the original series when Mulder and Scully were both in it), why don't we instead make a movie spin-off of THE MAN FROM UNCLE, and forbid anyone even remotely associated with the movie THE WILD WILD WEST from having anything to do with it? #xfiles
I'm all in favor, provided they completely de-canonize all the schmoopy relationship crap in the last movie.
In my head, Mulder has been on the run this whole time, only popping in to see Scully every couple years when he needs to compare notes, get a gunshot wound fixed up, or have a quick snog; but they can't actually be together in any sense of the word because THE FATE OF HUMANITY IS AT STAKE.
The last one was pretty damn good, but it just wasn't what people were expecting, which was exactly what you said you wanted from a new sequel.
For me, it was never about the conspiracy, it was the characters. Seeing Mulder and Scully at a point in their lives where they're trying to dig themselves out of rock bottom was completely disheartening, but the movie was a damn fine thriller that touched on the important social themes that defined the characters.
Was it a two hour episode of show? Well, yeah, but that's not exactly a bad thing. The first movie was just an expensive 2 hour episode. Give me personal and emotionally involving any day.
@Allen_Richards: Just out of curiousity, Meredith, what didn't you like about it? I just realized I disagreed with you without knowing your exact issues on the topic resorting solely to personal taste, for which I apologize. #xfiles
@Allen_Richards: The last movie was pretty good, the problem is the expectations of some mythology changing epic, which isn't what it was, and isn't really why I watched the show from week to week.
Sure, it was "just another story," but after all those years without X-files I liked getting another story. The only thing I hated was that they killed the one person in the entire FBI who believed Mulder. Scully's skepticism is painfully silly after all she has been through. #xfiles
@Allen_Richards: I f the film is done , I hope it ends on a grand scale on every possible level . To show why everyone loved x-files in the place . #xfiles
@Allen_Richards: I actually agreed that it was excellent. In truth, I despised the conspiracy arc. It was incoherent and full of holes. Monster-of-the week? yum. I especially loved the funny ones. A show that could balance terror and comedy! I suspect that very few would be able to match the X-Files in this respect. #xfiles
@Allen_Richards: The last movie was the most boring thing I have ever seen. I have never been more tempted to walk out of a movie, and I've seen Ringmaster.
I thought the movie was so bad that it had to be part of a government conspiracy to keep people from being interested in government conspiracies.
Sorry but any movie where they decided to cast Xzibit is indefensible. #xfiles
@Allen_Richards: I liked the 2nd movie, too. It was quiet, thoughtful, and tightly-woven. I feel like the incoherent series finale made it difficult to accept anything that came afterwards, I'm not sure how the writers can extricate themselves from that mess if they tried to write any more in the mythology arc. #xfiles
@Allen_Richards: I agree with you. I was surprised when I found that people didn't like the second movie, because I thought it was great. It's always about the characters for me. Interesting characters in an interesting story (and the premise of the story actually touched on a MAJOR body-horror squick of mine) is just interesting to me. I've been going back and rewatching X-Files recently and I'm finding the episodes I want to watch again are not the conspiracy episodes, or really even the Monster of the Week episodes, but the episodes in which the characters develop or change or come to a turning point. #xfiles
@BlueBeard: Well, Amanda Peat and the child, who was so central to the final seasons of the show. If anything could turn people off, it was the outright depressing atmosphere that oozed in every frame. Dead kids. Pedophilia. It was about as anti-commercial as Hollywood films get. Seriously, how often were guns pulled and fired in that movie? Which is exactly what every other Hollywood thriller falls back on...
Was Scully still a skeptic in that film? I sort of took her as someone completely jaded, an extension of her "believer" role that she took on in the final seasons. I see it that she's seen it, believes, and doesn't want any part of it. Almost like she's in denial. #xfiles
@disatess: I think everyone loved it for different reasons, as this thread illustrates. Some prefer the grand arc, which I thought they'd wrapped for the most part, while some folks share my view in that it's the quieter, character moments that compelled us to watch from week to week.
That being said, would I like to see something as epic as the first movie with the humor of CLYDE BUCKMAN'S FINAL REPOSE? You bet! #xfiles
@OW-Holmes: Bringer of Fear: Well, there you go. I dug RINGMASTER. Any movie with The American Ninja, and Jamie Pressley showing her goodies, is alright in my book. ;)
I need to confess, Xzibit did annoy me, thankfully he was underused.
I can see how folks would find it boring, especially in today's realm of over-the-top spectacle. All the thrills were characters driven, and toned down, not eye-poppin' mega-goodness (which I love).
As for walking out of movies, I've only one a few: THE OMEGA CODE, MARTIAN'S GO HOME, FANTASIA (not by choice, my friends wanted to split - we were 11). I would have walked out on both LETHAL WEAPON 4 and BATMAN & ROBYN if I'd been the one driving... #xfiles
@alixana: And I don't think Carter should bother with the mythology, at least not to any high degree. Why spend 20 years on the same subject that's already been beaten into the ground?
I'm of the mindset that the bigger you make a movie, the more the filmmakers loose site of what's important - the characters and story. I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this thinking that something a little depth is just what the doctor ordered, although, not at the height of the summer movie season... #xfiles
@samarkand: Body horror messes with me as well, even something like my pal Greg Lamberson's SLIME CITY, which is extremely cartoonish, but has this viral aspect that, well ---blah!!!! With respect to THE X-FILES 2, the horror/fantasy elements were underplayed, just like everything else in the movie, and felt plausible. There were definitely elements of the fantastic, hallmarks of the old show, but this movie existed primarily to tell us where M&S were at this point in their lives - exactly what you find yourself gravitating towards in the repeats. This was a story that existed to explore the characters, not serve them. #xfiles
This would be nice, perhaps a return of Cigarette Smoking Man, too? Also lets get Terry O'Quinn involved while we're at it. Why not send it off in full force?
It's cool that dude hasn't become complacent, nailing hot women week-in-week-out over on Showtime. I know i would! #xfiles
If he is so committed to X Files why did he leave the show in the first place? Oh yeah! I guess he needed to devote more energy to "The Red Shoe Diairies", the only show that makes sex seem boring. #xfiles
@omnibus_spiritus: As much as I would have liked for this to have been the case, he left RED SHOES long before the X-FILES. You've got to remember, back in the early 90's, there wasn't much skin on cable aside from the occasional Skinamax teen sex comedy. For a red-blooded horny teen like myself to get his softcore on, it was RED SHOES or nuthin'.... (well, nuthin' in so much as my local cable company at the time didn't carry the Playboy channel.... bastards...)
The original RED SHOES movie was pretty decent, and still holds up somewhat. I'm pretty sure Duchovny is still friends with Bridget Bacho, or however you spell her name. That's the only thing I can think of that would explain her exceptionally brief cameo in CALIFORNICATION. #xfiles
@Allen_Richards: According to imdb, he did five Red Shoes movies between 2000 and 2002 (which is roughly when he was a "part-timer" on the show), so the original poster is correct.
He totally put his career on "Caruso control" after the X-files: Connie and Carla? Evolution? Return to Me? I don't doubt he wants to return to the glory days, but I think he should carry on with something else. #xfiles
@mst3k4ever: Back in film school I had pals who were amazed at my ability to identify actresses by their boobs. I can't do it these days, but give me time and I can get my game back....
From what I remember, DD's career didn't go as he'd hoped when he left X-FILES, and he had a dry spell. RETURN TO ME, EVOLUTION, and couple other failed endeavors. When I thought his career was dead was the time he decided to do another X-FILES movie. It's the only role of his that resonated with audiences, and is probably why he wants to return again. #xfiles
@Kamenwati: Was it? The only thing I can remember about the finale was Fox and Dana smoothcing and agreeing to take care of their kid.
Oh well, I've been meaning to go through the series from start to finish, just for old time's sake. Looks like I need a refresher so I better start soon. #xfiles
@Kamenwati: You're right about that. I remember the reference to the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012 as being the date the full-scale invasion begins.
I think another movie revolving around this would be sweet, so long as we have CSM and Krychek involved. #xfiles
@J_Frank_Parnell: I want more of Marita Covarrubias, and X. I waited forever for X to come back, then they decided he was dead and showed him in ghost form- biggest disappointment of the series. There is no way that blood trail was his at the end of S1. Still, we could get some X flashbacks.
@Kamenwati: It did because I remember it being the first time I had heard about the 2012 thing and when I mentioned that they said 2012 as the date of invasion on X-Files he told me about the Mayan calendar thing. #xfiles
