You forgot to mention Yu Yu Hakusho and it's coutnerpart, Flame of Recca. DragonBall (the original) sparked a huge amount of "Martial Arts Tournament" Manga in the late 80's, early 90's.
I have the whole manga set, the spines of all the books combined turns into an awesome picture. I really wish Japan did the live action version of Dragonball instead of letting Hollywood screw it up (ex. of Japanese anime/game movie=>), because it probably would have looked a lot better.
@viloki9: Might have looked better... maybe. But it apparently would have still been ridic cheesy. I mean, 「さらばだ!!」. (And also Takao Osawa looked like Matsumoto Jun from Kimi wa Petto in that clip.)
But the whole fun of live-action movies based on manga is that they will probably never be well-acted or true enough to the source material. They're just cheesy fun (and spicylunch is right, the Jp version -- from a looong time ago -- is hilare).
I love Dragon Ball and the live action movie just . . . gives me a headache. Considering how cartoon-y and silly the series can be (and it never pretended to be anything more, having started out simply as a parody of Journey to the West, etc.), Dragon Ball does seem far more suited for a CGI movie on par with Astro Boy, as you suggested, rather than full blown live action.
But either way you slice it . . . the live action Dragon Ball movie is a half-assed attempt to cash in on Fox's waning rights to the franchise, with a horrible, plot-hole-ridden script dripping with Hollywood, action movie cliches (suddenly Goku's "the chosen one"), wooden acting (how DOES Chatwin continue to be paid for looking vacant and speaking in monotone?), to say nothing of how the plots and the characters' personalities were altered. (Goku goes from an Asian-esque wild boy who is somewhat selfish but well-meaning, an extreme extrovert with buckets of self-confidence, to a geeky Peter Parker-wannabe white boy who gels his hair to impress the girls and just wants to "fit in" with the cool kids at high school. ARGH.)
In short: Fox scraped the bottom of the barrel with this crappy script, trying to morph it into a combination of Spider-Man and . . . something else. But not Dragon Ball. =/ Can you tell that I do not recommend it?
@LiC: Now THAT is a truly scary thought. (Just because my friends and I pretended we were Seels during swim class doesn't mean that needs to be on the big screen.)
Is this something that the furries community might get behind?
I never was very interested in the Dragon Ball manga or anime. Mostly because I felt it insulted the original Sun Wukung stories from Journey to the West I was raised with (take that, you "my childhood has been raped" pikers). Of course Sun Wukung was just a rip-off of Hanuman from The Ramayana.
I see now that Dragon Ball has developed a complex if totally silly-looking mythology all to its own as well as some very dedicated fans. The movie really does look awful. Cannot wait to play the drinking game!
@浴武士!!!! I'd like to start a manga like that: I've seen a Chinese tv series of it, and it was awesome, even though it was kinda low budget. I don't think an Americanized version of it would even translate very well. Especially since the whole point of the journey was to retrieve Buddhist sutras... maybe they can change it to retrieving a pre-release version of Halo 4?
I have had ideas for a huge story with versions of Monkey, Lady White Snake and tons of other legendary characters. There are a few notes and sketches, I've only been working on it for about 20 years. I sorta stopped when China Mieville came out with Perdido Street Station, too similar looking. That and I'm lazy as hell.
@LicouriceXLazarus: umm whats a weaboo? ive been hearing that alot but i have no idea what it means...i cant be offended with words you guys make up! come on try harder!
@Kira16: You mean several episodes? I was first really initiated during the end of the Android saga and managed to watch the entire Cell saga. I swear two of the episodes was of two fighters breathing angrily at eachother for 20 minutes while the rest of the Z Team hid behind boulders and made commentary.
@crashedpc: so that's it for this weeks chapter/episode of "manga that westerners will one day turn into a stereotypical hollywood movie X!!!" "begin epic echoing"
tune in next time where our hero battles a giant chikan monster that terrorizes the subways of Montreal!
@浴武士!!!! I'd like to start a manga like that: Sadly, lots of anime that I download nowadays follows closely to the previously outlined plot. It's getting hard to choose decent quality series to follow.
@浴武士!!!! I'd like to start a manga like that: At least they're mostly chock full of awesome CG! Basquash is about goddamn basketball mechas, with an insanely busty lady, but who cares, because CG is awesome. Sigh. I'm a graphics whore.
I prefer to pretend that James Marsters does not exist outside of Spike. Anything else I've seen him in (including, uh, himself) is really lame in comparison.
@darundal: Whatever. Just go the hell home. If you don't want to see this movie, don't see it. But don't pretend like you know whether it's going to be good or bad.
