Who wants to give me a top ten list for the original series? Or point me towards a reliable one?
I've only seen a handful of TOS, but am trying to fix that before the movie - just saw "Mirror Mirror" for the first time last night, and I now appreciate The Middleman's "Palindrome Reversal Palindrome" so much more! The FatBoy logo with the sword through it! Ahahaha...
Anyway, I welcome a must-see list for TOS, please, kthx.
@Elizabeth Weinbloom: Actually I almost included this in the list but I already had 10 other lists: [www.amazon.com] . This is a pretty good set of suggestions.
You know, my worst ST movie is not TMP. It's ST V. Not only the story is terrible terrible terrible, not only Spock suddenly has a half-brother, not only the whole god thing is total crap, but it was directed by Shatner. Come on, he was a minimally decent actor in his youth, but he sucked big time as the director of ST V. The only good line in that movie, that I can recall, is "Why does god need a spaceship?"
My ranking of ST movies, in case anyone cares at all:
"While it may be true that *some* young men would collapse into periods of self-loathing and doubt when tasked with saving the world (the WORLD!), those fellows tend to work as hairdressers or get jobs as social workers."
Well expressed. The biggest problem with this series, which otherwise seems to be coming along surprisingly well, is the characterization written for the mid teen version of the upcoming 'savior' of humanity. Thus far there are no hints that person resides at all in this really disgusting teen that needs to be slapped about enough to get him to start looking past himself. Hard for a teen, no doubt, but many manage it just fine. If anything will get me to stop watching this program, it is the depiction of John Connors, and I doubt I am alone in this. The series concept people need to rethink and change directions for the writers.
@stephen_newberg: Actually... it's been up and down. The military school episode was note-perfect. John was clearly a future leader of men, he knew his way around weapons, he was calm and a little bit arrogant. Perfect. I would like to see *that* version of John more often. But I think the show is trying to make us doubt him, so we'll realize we were wrong, or to create tension.
Charlie, you had a problem with John and Sarah's argument, which while long pushed teh side, and relatively non-sensical, kinda fits. It's BAG yelling at Sarah that I didn't understand. "He's acting more like John Balm and less like John Conner!" I found that really weird, considering just a few episodes before this John saved the military brat's life and worked with Derek to figure out how to kill the terminator of the week. Makes me hope that episode was shown out of order, as it might play better after this Jesse/Derek and John/Dr Venture storyline ends. It just seems so weird for him to come into his own so much, and then to drop him back where he was four or five episodes earlier.
Also really not sure I like the Biblical references. It's done rather well, but just not sure I like what it implies.
I thought the episode was pretty awesome. There's one thing about the show that's been bothering me though and I can't tell if it's intentional or not.
Basically I feel like with all the over protection Sarah has been giving John, she's essentially making him soft. I mean I understand him staying alive is rule number 1 on the agenda list but just as Derek made clear in the episode about the guy at military school, it won't matter if he stays alive if he doesn't become the man he's supposed to be.
What makes me fell better about it though is the fact that Derek has hinted at this before and basically outright said it this episode (the comment about him becoming more John Baum than John Connor). So hopefully they'll actually deal with that and start letting John loose.
@Guitaratomik: Yeah, I think it's intentional. John is over-sheltered, and he's also too dependent on machines, especially Cameron. The way they're going, he's not going to be the John Connor he would have been in the original future, and it's something they're explicitly trying to deal with. Looking forward to more Derek/Sarah conflict.
I'm rather pleased with where this is all going... and the evolution of the characters compared to last season (and compared to Heroes...) is excellent.
I agree with Mooshie - the little terminator behavioral quirks and slight detaisl that the writers keep slipping in are great.
@Ghost_in_the_Machine: Agreed. I had to do a quick TiVo rewind when she capped the three in the bowling alley. Sarah had just told her to watch them, and Cameron took her own initiative to completely eliminate even the possibility the three would be a liability in the future.
It's too bad that Sarah is the one that keeps creating liabilities in the future. She rags on John for attempting to be "normal", yet lets loose ends wander around for Skynet to capture and interrogate. First she didn't kill the creator of the Turk, now Guitar Hero kid.
@Plague: I totally agree with you. But I believe the producers want to make the point that Sarah's compassion is what sets humans apart from Skynet and terminators, and that's why humans will prevail in the future.
The one thing about last night's episode that caught my attention was Cameron. While the Connors were worried about getting passports, ids, diamonds, and money, Cameron really wanted her leather jacket back.

Linda Hamilton wouldn't even have blinked.
