Seriously, though, he's completely right. The only people who would seriously gripe about such a delay are people who have never sat down and tried to write a complete novel themselves. Or worse, are the people who *have* cranked one out in about a month and wonder why Martin can't do the same. Because Martin's novel will be publishable and good, you hack, that's why!

I've tried three times to get into A Feast For Crows and just gave up because after a four year gap between books I simply could not remember who any of the characters were or just what the fuck was going on, and simply didn't have the time, energy or inclination to reread parts 1-3. I take Charlie's points, but writing long-ass fantasy sagas these days seems to have more in common with debugging software than, oh I dunno, telling a story. After all, the whole of Lord of the Rings is only about a thousand pages, which is significantly shorter than a single installment of your typical contemporary mega-epic.

Fortunately for me, it looks like I can watch Song of Fire and Ice on the teevee soon, or at the very least, catch up on DVD sometime in the future.

@lightninglouie: I hear you, brother. I own all the books, but have only read "A Game of Thrones" because, quite honestly, I can only remember the fundamentals of the first novel's plot. I plan to clear my reading shelf out, start over, and read all five books from the beginning.

Ugh, fine. But I'll just wait even longer for a used copy. Sorry George, but you lost a Hardcover sale and I'm probably not the only one.

I read the first 3 (4?) books and I have to say...the writing is good, the characters are interesting and well defined, the world is well built and there are threads of story that I'm interested in following...

but jebus!...get on with it...hundreds of pages of nothing...

Wheel of Time suffers from this also but at least there is plenty of action to keep you reading in between...

Game Of Thrones series is considered the best by so many but honestly I just don't see it...needs a stronger editor.
