No, Bitches, It's Not a Designer Baby

It's inevitable: the media has not only confused human reproductive cloning with "designer babies," but in fact they have confused a stem cell experiment with designer babies too. I love my sensationalist science as much as the next person, but the London Times has gone batshit with its reports that a GM human embryo could lead to "designer babies" out there in the wilds of science land. Now all these anti-baby engineering groups are going nuts because nobody has bothered to explain the science to them. Even Wired picked up the story, though thankfully without the "designer baby" crap. So what's the deal? When will you get your designer baby with wings and mutant powers? More »

Meet Graphic Designer Stephanie Fox

io9 has been looking for a graphic designer for a while, and lucky for us Stephanie Fox has stepped up to help out! She immediately caught our eye by professing to love infographics, which is a love we share. And she's the person who created the awesome infographic we ran last week about the relationship between dystopian movies and economic cycles. She'll also be designing a lot of other stuff for us, so look for the credit that says "Illustration by Stephanie Fox" next time you see something that looks beautiful on io9. Check out more of Stephanie's work on her site, Bezier Labs.

Why You've Already Heard Scifi's Ubiquitous Wilhelm Scream

You've probably heard the Wilhelm Scream dozens of times in different movies and television shows without realizing it, but it's one of those things that once you hear, you'll always be able to identify it afterwards. It's now become an in-joke amongst sound editors who try to insert it into their films whenever there's a perfect moment that just needs an over-the-top scream. It began as a Warner Bros. stock sound effect, but was revived and put to serious use by Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt. Now the thing just won't die. Find out more in our screaming triviagasm below. More »

Yearning For Serene Flying Paddleboats

A lot of sci fi concept art has a tendency to be spiky and sharp looking, and you'll usually see enough spires and knife-edged towers to populate an entire world with if you flip through a book of book of alien artwork. That's why artist Ryan Church's floating paddleboat here looks serene and peaceful. You could just imagine spreading a blanket under that tree and taking a nap while these leviathans glide by overhead. Could someone out there get a Huckleberry Finn in Space project started ASAP?
