In this case, though, it's probably why there's movie interest. "It's _The Big Sleep_ ... BUT WITH FORMER SPIES!". Easy to say. Easy for the studio execs to understand. And, fortunately, the McGuffin *is* a McGuffin, so the screenwriter can easily remove the pandering-to-the-too-hip-for-words-crowd It's Hitler's Own Porn(tm) from the story.

And, actually, Big Sleep With Spies is why I didn't think Jones would work as a movie. It's so obviously derivative of several easily identifiable sources it's pointless. It works well enough as an exercise in style and writing, but not as a stand alone movie.
