Of course it depictss a Stegosaurus. Just compare the photo of the bas-relief with the accurately colored illustration below. They're even facing the same way.

    You cannot ignore the facts.

Well I've heard it theorized that fossil remains were one of the inspirations for dragon stories. I've also heard that people in China(?) would grind up dragon bones (fossils) for their medicinal properties. I would imagine that fossils may have been much more common thousands of years ago. Then humans started collecting them for various cultural reasons and over time most of the easily found fossils were destroyed. That leaves the more difficult to find fossils we know today.

@chargernj: The "dragon" bones used in Chinese medicine were almost always of mammals. Fossils are still being found in China but the probably used up a lot of them.

For similar reasons there are probably no natural jade deposits or bears left in the Middle Kingdom. River turtles are so rare China is importing them from the US.

Oh, in passing, if you ask pretty much any working paleontologist (who's not emotionally invested in the alternative) "Hey, when did the dinosaurs die out?", these days, they'll mostly answer "They didn't." Senior ornithologists aside (many of whom appear to think that birds have to be this amazing unique creation, and get very stroppy about the feathered dinosaurs from China,) it's generally accepted these days that birds are, in phylogenetic terms, dinosaurs, and so, yes, dinosaurs survived in the Cambodian jungle until the middle ages. They survived in the chicken farm up the road until I bought me a bucket of extra-crispy, too.

Looks in the head region to be a triceratops. The large bony crest type shape.

It's hard enough to believe that this PARTICULAR species survived for 60 million years in this PARTICULAR area- even harder to believe that it would show no significant evolution over that time.

Or, as has been shown repeatedly, if you actually look at the illustration head on, and don't photoshop it, it's a frickin' asian rhino with some background leaves. Look at the lump things around the outside of the circle; same graphic elements as inside. Look at the other animal circles for the same graphic elements.

To take a look at the circle head-on, try this link:

If I may apply Occam's Razor here: "One expert on Khmer ruins has told us that it is unlikely that these images are a recent addition to the temple."

Yes, clearly that is far less likely than the localized survival of dinosaurs more than 60 million years after the rest of them died out. Clearly.

@Moff: Yeah, you're allowed to link to stuff you've written as long as it's not spam. Here is an example of the kind of comment we don't allow: "Wow, what an interesting post. I know a site where you can meet lots of singles at hotspameinjection.org." Moff's dating site for dinosaurs, however, is exempt because Moff has "special dinosaur status." Which I cannot tell you about.

I've read this article before at the Very Important Paleontology Conference at Freiberg . All of those Brilliant Scientists, so famous I do not need to repeat their names, agreed the Moffuloid Theory of Draconic Obviousness makes perfect sense, much more so than Mein Kampf. Well done, Dr. Moff.
