the cavil character has been elevated way beyond what he/they should have been. BSG went off the rails towards the end, and that whole BS thing about "Daniel is Starbuck's father" was just irritating to listen to. You can't have writers who take a "make stuff up as you go" approach when you have a serialized show like BSG.
The writer (and I believe the showrunner) for this "movie" was Jane Epenson, who as we all know sucks and ruined the last few episodes, if not the entirety of the last season of BSG.
This means that this "movie" also sucks.
The point of the movie was to make money off of DVD sales, plain and simple, not to tell a story.
Since the "movie" sucks, no one will buy the DVD of it -- if they see it first.
So they release it on DVD first, to squeeze the last few financial drops of blood out of the loyal BSG fan base before it becomes known that the "movie" sucks.
Frankly, the last season ruined BSG so much for me that I have no desire to see it nor do I ever want to see anything made by Jane Epenson.

No, the lack of forward planning from s3 onwards wrecked the last eppisodes.
Jane Epenson was just responsible for not coming up with a neat ret-con to explain away all the resurrection/new Viper/different earth/angel of death/nonsense.
And the whole lets-all-die-out stuff.
And the silly laughing at the end.
And..
well, ok, lots.
But not -everything-.
@Kiamat: The SyFy site has the same shipping date for the Blu-Ray version. Attempts to find a date for the Region 2 UK release have so far met with failure. Amazon.co.uk is currently only showing the Blu-Ray version as a US Import, release date also Oct 27th.
my dad used to say: After the gold is gone, some mine the dirt in hope of a last nugget. I have been told this is nothing more than rehash and a Dean Stockwell vanity project. I LOVE BSG mining the dirt just tarnishes the gold
@kivel: I've got enough respect for Edward James Olmos to believe that he put his best foot forward with this (although I would not be surprised if Dean Stockwell saw it as a vanity piece). I'll give it a chance simply b/c EJO directs.
@Bender is my hero!: It sounded to me more like an EJO vanity project from the beginning. I'm amazed he hasn't shoehorned himself and his kid into this movie.
EJO has a LOT of ego, esp. about BSG. More than Dean, who's pretty mellow and very shy IRL.
I used to respect EJO a lot, going back to the 80's, but his behavior during BSG has really turned me off.
Hmm. Wonder if it's been punted to premier around Caprica, maybe give that a bit of a bounce? Total idle speculation though, especially as I suspect this is far more likely to be an attempt to push sales on the DVD.
I'll join the chorus-- I didn't think The Cell was all that bad. I felt no need to watch it a second time, but it didn't suck nearly so much as this post suggests.

To those at Airlock Alfalfa: I was being sarcastic.

I believe this is the first time in human history that those four words have been used together as a phrase.
