I'd recommend that you see Ginger Snaps, it's an overlooked, but easy to find gem. From the previews I've seen of Jennifer's Body they look to have a similar plot. Using the theme of two best friends growing apart in post-adolescence as the backdrop for horror.
@PeytonMaguire: Ginger Snap is awesome, and Ginger Snap 2 is very good too. Tough the main backdrop for horror in Ginger Snap is more menstruation then friendship, but it sure look similar to Jennifer Body.
@collex: What? Ginger Snaps (note the S) was great, and Ginger Snaps two was NOT great. Oddly enough, Ginger Snaps 3 was actually pretty good. Not as good as the first, but who'd a thunk?
Great interview. I love the idea of that intense codependent high school girl relationship being the basis of the conflict instead of the tired "woman scorned" or abused trope like with Carrie or Teeth or something.
This always looked like a good film to me. Reminds me a bit of "Heathers", that sort intelligent, funny dialogue teenage girl coming of age movie.
I look at Megan Fox and I see a stunningly beautiful woman, she has that classic hollywood beauty that doesn't come around that often.... and in her interviews she is sharp and witty. So she's not dumb the way so many h8ers wish she were.
You guys think you're sick of her NOW? She hasn't even begun to take off. She is going to be a huge star. Better prepare yourselves for it.
This is the first article I've read that makes me even remotely interested in seeing this movie. I'm so sick of hearing about Megan Fox...she's totally overexposed. Well, like most popular celebrities.
I like to think Adam Brody's character is actually Seth Cohen from the OC, and this is just the natural progression his character has had since the show went off the air. He went to college, joined a hipster band, and then became the complete cool opposite of the comic book nerd he was in high school. And now he's totally evil.
It's quite a logical and realistic way for crazy people who need to correlate everything to their favorite show from high school. And anyway, I've dated more than a few Seths who ended up doing just that, so I'm projecting.
The real horror is how these commercials for this sad excuse for a horror-comedy (marketed as soft porn) keep cropping up everywhere where there is talk about movies.
I wouldn't knock the movie quite yet. Diablo's writing has been great in Juno and United States of Tara, so I'm cautiously optimistic that this movie will be a lot of fun. I'm still going to wait to see what the reviews say, but if there's good buzz I'll probably check it out. From this interview it sounds like it has a good emotional grounding to the horror that could really add some depth to the story.
@Batmanuel: well i can't speak for tghe united states of tara but i can sum up the brilliance of juno in two words: ellen page. beyond that it was pretty average.
The great thing about the movie is it leaves quite a lot to personal interpretation, much a like a good novel.
Though it does seem that Neill here is still trying to figure out the whole plot so let's assist!...
- Christopher had been working on the fuel pod for 20 years (fact) so he is already a different classification of alien, much like ants or bees, worker, soldier etc. He must be 'Tech' and most likely the pilot of the ship who broke away from the mother ship at the very beginning - so he already was/is sentient and there was no transformation going on there
- I'm not too sure how long it takes for the 'prawns' to reach maturity but Chris's kid is smart, now is this because of education or he has the Johnson genes? Or are all the newborn prawns 'smart' and the drones were actually 'created'?
- Wikus's transformation was pretty quick and if an alien race needed 'workers/slaves' to do whatever it is they need done then it would make sense to invade a planet and convert the species into 'bugs'. I mean why all the weapons on the ship?
Something sinister about these prawns gentlemen, don't be fooled by their sad expressions......!
If you read all of it, they didn't come here to mine. Their ship made an emergency landing on the closest planet that could sustain life. There are a lot fewer of those in this side of the universe.
What's more interesting, especially if critics of the backstory just let your willing suspension of disbelief kick in, is what happens when the new queen hatches and starts organizing the society again. What is unclear is what the alien insects mine for. If it is water and other things found on Earth, then that spells trouble for humans. The moral undertones of the story is interesting, but if Earth has something they want, then they become a very dangerous enemy. This brings up a good question of to what extent is man willing to suspend its morality for preserving itself?
"I think that they do have a home planet, it's pretty far away probably in the Andromeda Galaxy, but what I like is that they'll live on the ship for thousands of years. Obviously, there's much more of a population on the main planet, but the ships will go out and get the minerals and the ore and whatever resources they need and then bring them all back home."
.
Gah, that's just dreadfully stupid. Space is big. Resources are abundant (especially if you have the technology for intergalactic travel). The idea of mining minerals and ore and transporting them across interstellar distances is silly enough - the idea that they're here, looking to bring rocks back to the Andromeda Galaxy is utterly indescribable.
.
What, everything between here and there is mined out?

Very interesting except for the part where he completely borks the concept of a hive mind. A hive mind does need a guiding mind on top. Queens in hives are only important in that they're the only ones who can lay eggs.
@chigaze: Wow. Being that no earthly insect is, in fact, sentient. And that no hive is composed of sentient individual bug-man members, one might quite appropriately assume that this is FUCKING SCIENCE FICTION. How the fuck would YOU know what a hive of sentient bugs would be like? Aren't you just countering fiction with fiction? Isn't that a pretty bullshit reason to criticize?

Seriously, you wouldn't even know Amanda is the co-star/main character the way the ads portray the story.
