These two episodes really started to feel more wedonesque than anything Dollhouse has shown so far, complete with the classic whedon banter between characters and even the creation of the usual scooby gang at the end!
It's a shame it has been canceled, but at least it will go out with a bang. =D
I had considered the entire "attic" concept kind of a dumb plot hole - you can wipe people and instead you want to go torture them for no good reason? (it's bad business -- no ROI on it! if they need to disappear people instead of just wiping/reimprinting them, there are simpler and more permanent ways to do it.)
But this last episode, we suddenly discover there's a valid reason for it to exist. And it *fits*, plot-wise. Well done, "Dollhouse".
Now my question is what person we have already met is actually the other founder of Rossum? My off-the-cuff guess is Summer Glau's character, since she's smart, glitchy, recently introduced, morally flawed, and really *really* pissed off at Caroline.
During the second hour of Dollhouse, I was completely freaking out. Echo's Attic dream might be the greatest dream sequence ever in a Joss Whedon show. And as the revelations kept coming I was literally on the edge of my seat. Eliza Dushku also has started giving absolutely fantastic performances, and she blew me away last night. I honestly had tears in my eyes at the end of the show just because it was so terrific.
Just three things to say: I love this show. I'm going to miss it. These 2 episodes were fan-frakking-tastic.
...well I have one more thing to say, HUGE kudos for all the Star Trekky/Matrixy nods. Neo!Echo downloading everything but Kung Fu into her super!brains? Yesplz. Then the goo the Attic'd Actives were saran wrapped into was so Cylon/Matrix/Fringe LSD bath-esque. Best episodes, EVAR.
And how come Topher never said "Resistance is futile" even ONCE, we all know it's just like something he'd say.
Bad theology in the second half. The Harrowing of Hell goes in the Easter episode, not the Christmas one. Other than that, almost nothing to say to that.
The first episode was significantly better, though hackneyed. The love of Sierra will conquer all ::rolleyes::
I do have to say, though, that it's gotta hurt when your doll tells you he doesn't believe you'd have to lower yourself to hiring a doll. "There is no smoking in my office. There is, however, drinking until I pass out face down and drooling over my fantastically expensive desk."
I liked these two episodes, and it's cool being so invested even if it's ending soon. I mean, movies end after about two hours and we've got considerably more of Dollhouse to roll around once it's all on DVD, so it's not the biggest loss, considering it would definitely not be this awesome if it hadn't gotten cancelled.
Anyway, I liked the joke, in the Attic episode, where Clyde is like, "Well, what year is it?" and Echo goes, "2010? Who knows how long we've been off the air..."
@MonkeyT: I had exactly the same thought. How are we supposed to know that E1 "really happens" (within the continuity of the show)? Are these the shadows of the things that Will be, or are they shadows of things that May be, only?
If you take away all of the dumbed-down (by edict of FOX), engagement of the week episodes (including this season's premiere), Dollhouse has provided some of the very best sci-fi television that I've seen -- and beginning with the Sierra/Nolan episode, this season has consistently delivered. That's the silver lining in all of this, I guess -- when we have both seasons on DVD, we can skip those episodes and pretend they never existed to drag down the overall quality of the series.
I stuck with the show the whole time and am really glad it is paying off. I agree starting off stronger might have saved this show but at least we'll get a conclusion.
I had wondered why Rossum went through the trouble of setting up the Attic instead of just killing or mindwiping problem children. Now it makes sense.
I was pleasantly surprised that Adelle ended up not becoming Darth DeWtitt (like I called her last week).
You've just gotta know that Joss has every intention of stuffing some of the finest broadcast television that's aired in years up Fox's ass on his way out the door...
This story just went over the line into "stunningly good."
No room to mention "I must stay here and try to enjoy myself?" That was the creepiest thing I've seen on TV since....last week's Dollhouse, actually.
And another thought occurred to me. What if the hive-mind guys are one of the four groups at the end? You have Actuals, Butchers, Wielders, and Dumbshows. Two of these we know the definition of; two we don't. But if we know Rossum has hive-mind supersoldiers, it stands to reason as a possibility.
@MsFeasance: That whole sequence was absolutely perfect. The moment wherein his bloody stumps were revealed was entrancing and magnificent and ridiculously creepy.
i loved the double dollhouse fridays. they were my friday events for the past few weeks. now it is a single episode in january... back to normal at work. give me something to love.
You pretty much said it all, CJ. I get the distinct impression Dollhouse is going to turn into Firefly in its after-life, i.e. collecting rabid fans from DVD screenings and fostering enmity for the Fox Network. I'm half-convinced Mutant Enemy is doing this on purpose for some strange reason...
Anyway, loved everything but especially the couple shout-outs to Angel last night too (the Hyperion Hotel and just everything about that last scene.) And it looks like they are even going to salvage the one weak part of the first two-parter, by promising to add context to the weird flashback between Caroline and Bennett.
@txtphile: Dollhouse was already considered important enough to rate its own forum at the Worldcon in Montreal last August. That was one of the more intense panels during that weekend, though many of those in the room felt that it was a combination of the original pilot and Epitaph 1 that gave the series the most weight. The last six episodes have been up to that standard, as far as my wife and I are concerned.
Last night's episodes reminded me of how I felt watching the last episodes of T:SCC (I know you're thinking "Why can't anyone talk about Dollhouse without T:SCC?!"). I almost killed my family because they tried talking to me during the show. I was dumbstruck about how far this show has gotten since its first episode. I was literally jumping up and down and laughing hysterically during the last 2 minutes. It was amazing.
Also I loved the Topher/Boyd moments. Topher grew a soul and has a man-friend!
