James Cameron Could Launch the Seven Samurai Into Space
New Movie To Redeem Seven Samurai For SF Fans

Wow, that sucks already.

Which part? This IS the basic plot of Seven Samurai (as well as a whole slew of well-regarded films that have used the same exact storyline.)

Once it's out you can shit on him all you want. But if any sci-fi director deserves a fair chance, it's Cameron. Sure he made Titanic, and sure he may be a bit of an asshat these days... But let's be fair, this is the man who made T2 and Aliens. For those two feats alone he has the right to make shitty, derivative, overblown sci-fi movies for the rest of his life in my book.

I really need to learn not to post when it's late and cold and I'm super-tired and curmudgeonly. Sorry.

What next Zatoichi? Kamen Rider?

Heck, Cameron's been *associated* with a Seven Samurai remake before - Corman's _Battle Beyond The Stars_, as model maker and effects artist.
I think Ebert's right in claiming that _Seven Samurai_ is probably the first getting-the-team-together-to-go-on-a-mission film, and, as such, even films such as (the newer) _Ocean's Eleven) count as versions of Kurosawa's original. T'ain't nothing new to do another riff on the same idea, I b'leeve.

Just a little upset is all... why keep bringing it back? Just leave something that ain't broke alone.

I can totally relate to feeling protective about beloved classics, but I also think it's interesting to see how the same basic story gets interpreted by different artists, generations and cultures.

And even movies nowadays, that through careful thought and planning pull of the whole movie in B&W (exhibit A: Goodnight and Good Luck) I think it's a very tasteful and stylish choice.

I would argue that 7 Samurai or Casablanca (0r Big Sleep and Maltese Falcon for that matter) are good whether they are in color or b&w. When the story is good presentation becomes less important.

I think all directors nowadays need to have this tattooed on their arm.
One could also argue we're only nostalgic for the B&W because that's the way it was originally presented, and it would be difficult to imagine it in color. I would probably fall into that category, whether I like it or not. It's difficult to buck a preconceived notion.
Who knows? Maybe 20 years from now when everything is in 3D, people will be debating and saying "Oh man, back when everything was on screens, it was just better, bro. None of this holographic bullshit, it just rocked man!"

And I love how Kurosawa was influenced by American westerns at a time when the western genre was in decline in American theaters. For years the western languished at the box office. Then Italian directors saw Kurosawa's samurai films and used them as a model to reinvigorate the western.
It's a perfect example of cross-pollination of culture and art.

According to Wikipedia, "Roger Corman hired James Cameron as a model maker in his studio... Cameron became responsible for the special effects in Battle Beyond the Stars... This was Cameron's first "big break" in the entertainment industry, and it helped propel his career... Cameron was detail-obsessed to the point of micro-managing every little detail."

A Bug's Life could also be called a remake/rip-off.
