@HappyCthulhu: Oddly, I'm the reverse. Firefly was more excellent characters rather then excellent story's. Dr Horrible on the other hand was a pretty perfect way to tell a high-impact story in 45minutes. Which I thinks amazingly hard.
I can obsess over Horrible much more because of that.
@twDarkflame: I agree that the stories weren't all that great, but they really didn't have time to get into the swing of things before it was all over.
@burlybax: I think they mean, "Whedon figured out how to make money off those lazy-ass pirating Internet lowlifes!" when they say "success in new media."
There's a saying among writers that every writer has one story to tell, and he/she attempts to tell that one story in a variety of ways. Like the cliche says, there are many sides to a story, and if Joss hasn't finished telling those sides, which we know he isn't, regardless of what audiences/production companies think, he's going to do his best to tell those stories in whatever format is available for him to use. Firefly, Buffy, Dollhouse, the man's going to keep going.
I think by newest technology they are referring to the Imprinting device on Dollhouse. Because if the PGA is gonna give Whedon an award for anything after that suck-fest it's proof that they are all dolls and Joss is their master.
@Kubaker1: Then why do they allow shows like The Simpsons or all of McFarland's stuff? Because while they are very much non-conservative they rake in the money while Dollhouse was not.
@Kubaker1: I think I'd rather blame Murdoch. And Murdoch is a businessman first, callow fascist second. If Dushku were making him tons of money, he would fellate the Little Red Book in public in her support.
@JerryA: Agreed. The news and the entertainment ends of Fox have little connection, other than occaisonaly Fox News gets outraged by something that's on the Fox channel. Dollhouse just didn't get enough viewers.
@Kubaker1: Murdoch is a capitalist first, and will chase the almighty dollar.
Dollhouse failed because Dushku can only play one character, "Faith" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If she has to play any other character type, she fails miserably and painfully.
If Murdoch doesn't show anything involving Socialist actors, then we'll be stuck with the Clint Eastwood/Chuck Norris/Charlton Heston channel.
@JerryA: my brother pointed out that i didnt watch dollhouse despite the fact i've watched all of joss previous projects. i'm sure some of us are to blame cause we didn't support joss from the beginning and watch dollhouse. considering we read articles (right here on io9) that dollhouse had a rocky start to begin with, the pilot being a problem etc etc. i was still mad at fox for cancelling firefly and futurama so i didnt want to watch dollhouse and be let down if/when it got cancelled. joss has a unique style and picks people for his staff that share/have his same style. i'm sure he's not done with tv/movies/comics/webisodes. we'll hold till he gets back!
@Kubaker1: Oh I blame Eliza Dushku but not for that reason.
It has more to do with the fact that time and time again she has shown herself to not be suitable for a lead role and not capable of carrying a show in any way shape or form.
@Kubaker1: If there was a targetable high-spending demographic that wanted to hear socialist-slanted news-o-tainment 24/7, I have little doubt that News Corp would set a land speed record setting up a channel to service it.
I'm a Joss fan from way back, and I actually like Dollhouse, but you can't expect a show that turns in ratings that would be low for a basic cable channel on the same night to survive long on a network -- not even Fox.
Joss needs to either a) find a venue where the number of people who can be attracted to a smart, challenging show are enough to sustain the production budget, or b) make the shows more attractive to larger segment of viewers -- at least until they've got a season or two of solid ratings under their belt.
I still think Joss should do a soap, then he could do anything he wanted as long as the cast got naked while flying through the verse. I think he's ready for daytime.
I feel like Dollhouse is the system WORKING. It was challenging, so rather than cancel it, Fox gave it a second chance. Then we saw it was challenging but ultimately not that good, either. So it got canceled. I feel like that is the right set of events.
@mordicai: It was damaged by being placed on Friday nights, by a really poor start, and by a terrible marketing campaign that accented Eliza Dushku being naked, rather than promotion of the plotlines.
By the time the plotlines got better the audience had shrivelled from 4.7 million to 2.3 million viewers. It did stop shrinking however. Audiences were dropping by like 10% a week through the first 6 or 7 episodes.
The marketing campaign of Eliza Dushku naked was useless for a variety of reasons. First, it'll alienate potential female viewers by coming off as being some sort of soft porn for scifi geeks, which it isn't. Secondly, even if that weren't an issue, Dushku is not the hottest woman on TV and not even the hottest on Friday night, people who watch shows based on eye candy would not be watching dollhouse.
@danataf2: But at the same time, the core thing is that the show wasn't compelling enough to drive a large enough audience.
It had a chance, but even people who worship Whedon have admitted they just don't like it that much. That has nothing to do with the marketing, the time slot, or anything aside from the quality of the show.
I know Whedon doesn't like to admit his faults, but Dollhouse was flawed, and Fox can't be blamed for it's success or failure because the show itself couldn't stand on it's own.
@danataf2: I think saying women didn't watch Dollhouse because of the marketing is probably incorrect. I don't know a lot of women who would be alienated and avoid a show just because the ad campaign featured the actress naked. We're kind of used to that, and being ignored by marketing guys.
It was no secret what the show was about, and female fans of Whedon are legion. But they didn't respond to THE SHOW. I know of no one who stayed away because of the marketing, but who dropped it because of the show itself.
@twDarkflame: "Wait till you see X!" was the entire story of Dollhouse. "I know it is slow going but wait till this episode!" or "but wait till you meet Alpha!" or "Wait till next season!" or...well, eventually I get tired of waiting.
@tetracycloide: For a second I thought you meant 24 the show, which I've never watched and could disappear off the face of the earth for all I care. But yeah, I guess you have a point there. Although why did he buckle up?

If the actual plotlines couldn't save the show, then they absolutely needed that marketing campaign.
I watched out of hope it would get better, but I only really liked a handful of the episodes, if that.

You say that now, but wait till you see the last half :P
Dollhouse s2 seems like Fringe s2 to me.
Its only (finaly) got as good as the end of the last season after a very slow/reset like start.
