Disclaimer: I will never claim there were actual dragons, I'm not that big of a whacko. There's Sagan's "Dragons of Eden" proposal, but that is a heckuva stretch.
Just sayin'; the dragon is so deeply ingrained in all of our cultural histories and Jungian whatchamacallitz that trying to portray it in the manner that we do with Chestbursters, Terminators and the like will always ring false. Down deep we somehow know what a dragon is and the various movies and coffee table books we've seen in the last decades never seem to capture it.
Maybe modern storytellers should go more low key--sticking with the early tales without all the flash-bang that Hollywood CGI has to offer. Someone could explore the Legend of the Lambton Worm or the Terrible Terrasque of France (that some have postulated being a surviving member of the Auroch, the giant wild cattle that gentle Bossy was domesticated from).
Maybe even show a "realistic" version of St. George and his struggle against the 20" long venomous reptile that haunted a Lybian spring in the 3rd Century CE. How did he tame the savage beast and lead it away to be slaughtered? Then there is the mysterious Piasa of the Mississippi Valley or the powerful Nagas of Southeast Asia. Yes, I could go on and on...
Yah, okay, Michael Bay and Uwe Boll will never allow it.
Sorry, never mind. Please continue with the swooping 'splody stuff.

Does make me want to go out and buy Dragonslayer and Reign of Fire... and check out Eragon cause some friends said it wasn't too bad.

Other than that and to a similar extent Dragonslayer, any other dragon movie I can think of is damn near unwatchable. But one would think giant fire breathing flying T-Rexes would sort of write itself into awesomeness.

Sharks - Jaws
Dino - Jurassic Park
Zombies - Night/Dawn of the Dead
Vampires - Twilight (kidding)
etc..
But you see what I mean. There is no film when when someone says Dragon everyone goes... AH like -blah-
We need that film.
