Personally I find surgery--cutting and sewing people like garments!--a lot more squeamish than this.

Once the water is purified, it's just water. What do you think sewage treatment plants, wetlands and the solar cycle do? It's just water.

Look, nature does this. Today's dead grandma, tomorrows compost and worm food. We know this. Why is soylent green all that appalling? If use technology to make this process more efficient, what's the problem?

Well not cutting hunks off her corpse to fry up as steaks--that's a good way to get prion catalyzed diseases of the brain! No thanks! And I'm not saying there wouldn't be some sort of ceremony or rite of passage involved, I just don't see how this would be any worse than cremation.

I'm just saying there might be way to speed things up, so why don't we?

As long as the molecules are the right sort, one molecule is as good as the next, why care where it came from?

@corpore-metal: religion is the problem. various religions have been telling people they are more than just the sum of their atoms for thousands of years and therefor their dead bodies hold significance beyond just being a pile of dead organic matter.

@corpore-metal: personally my favorite way to render dead human matter into tasty consumable flesh is to feed it to pigs, pork being the most succulent of all meats. granted i've never actually had pit rosted pulled human.

Given the access to the raw energy burning through space, they could certainly use solar energy to simply boil off the water, rather than wasting so much time and effort on all the various steps, couldn't they? I seem to remember one of the national labs working on solar purification to use for sea water to try and speed up the process of purify water on a large scale, by concentrating sunlight into clear tubes of water and basically boiling out the impurities.

Whatever... This is your "new" NASA for you. Back in the day astronauts were tough as nails! Daredevils who looked danger in the face and punched it in the gut. The Right Stuff meant that if Buzz Aldrin was going to drink urine he was going to do it straight from the tap! None of this pansy filtration systems. This is whats wrong with America.
