I still own and cherish my copy of "20th Century Foss," the artbook put out by Dragon's Dream Publishers, which also put out beautiful and glossy books by Roger Dean, Syd Mead, and many others, back in the mid-70s and thereafter. (Time for a Dragon's Dream retrospective article / gallery, mayhap...?)

Yay, Jodo! Factoid: the new Metabarons GN has a lengthy sequence by AWOL WildC.A.T.S penciller Travis Charest, which is beyond awesome. The two of them on one book hugely rule.

Many of Jodorowsky's ideas for Dune were folded into his comics, like L'Incal and Metabarons. L'Incal is an utter braintrip, in the best sense of the word. Totally worth a read.

@FrankenPC: Oh, that is so unfortunate. I managed to hold on to my copies of 3 of his books. I never got the star liners book unfortunately, but I had the spacecraft, spacewars, and spacewrecks. Someone is doing a revival of the storyline that ran behind these for an RPG.

I have them - Spacecraft 2000-2100, Spacewrecks, Great Spacebattles and the Spaceliners one.

Foss wasn't actually involved with this series.. the work by other artists is very similar tho.

    Edit
Forgot to note there is a Spacewars book, that is Spacecraft 2000-2100 and Spacebattles in one Edition.

The Lynch version of Dune has always reminded me of what Beetlejuice said about The Exorcist — it gets funnier every time you see it.
Both versions of Dune have a problem in that they were faithful to the books to the extent of using Herbert's dialogue and duplicating the weaknesses of the stories as well as the strengths.
Pink Floyd, by the way, was supposed to have recorded music for Jodorowsky's Dune. #dune

I think they should let Alejandro Jodorowsky do his version. It wouldn't be Dune...but it would be something. I would also love to see Ridley Scott get the chance to direct Dune. He was all prepped to go forward with it back in the 1980s but then his brother died and he didn't feel like making a huge epic movie. Whoever they go with, I have a few casting choices:

    House Atreides
    1.Gurney Halleck - Colm Meaney
    2.Duke Leto - Liam Neeson
    3.Paul - Daniel Radcliffe
    4.Duncan Idaho - Temuera Morrison
    5.Lady Jessica - Juliet Binoche
    6.Dr. Yueh - Alexander Siddig/James Callis/Alessandro Juliani
    7.Thufir Hawat - Clancy Brown

    House Harkonnen
    1.The Baron - Robbie Coltrane
    2.Piter - Willem Dafoe/Brent Spiner
    3.Feyd Rautha - Tom Felton
    4.Beast Rabban - Jamie Waylett

    House Corrino
    1.Princess Irulan - Tricia Helfer/Kareena Kapoor
    2.Emperor Shadam IV - Hugo Weaving/Shahrukh Khan

    Fremen
    1.Stilgar - Avery Brooks/Robert Beltran
    2.Chani - Kareena Kapoor
    3.Dr. Kynes - Robert Beltran/Brent Spiner #dune

@Bill-Lee: Actually those aren't bad casting choices. The real problem is, Dune is essentially 3 books. To do it justice, it needs to be presented as 3 separate 2 or 3 hour installments. As much as I hate to suggest YAST (Yet Another Scifi Trilogy), this is the only way I can see the original source being given it's due.

I actually enjoyed both Lynch's and SciFi's take, fwiw. #dune

@micah1_8: I agree with everyone who thinks that if a new Dune movie is done, it should be done as three movies. Even as three movies, things will still have to be cut. There was a Dune forum (Dreamers of Dune, I think) that I was a member of that had a drive to get Peter Jackson to direct but he's never expressed any interest in the project. And frankly, I'm pretty sure LOTR and King Kong wore him out. Instead of looking for a director from the science fiction and fantasy the studio should be looking for someone familiar with Shakespeare and Greek Tragedy...someone with experience in both theater and film who also familiar with science fiction. Yet, someone who isn't a die hard fan who won't want to cut anything. #dune

Another way to go would be to get a director whose known for political thrillers... because, really, at its heart, Dune is just a political movie in a sci-fi setting. #dune

I dunno--I'm still skeptical that this movie will do very well. Dune is a very far out story, and I don't know if even a well-made version can a) even be possible, and b) appeal to a large enough audience.

That said, I hope I'm completely wrong. I'd like nothing more than for a faithful version of the story to receive wide acceptance. #dune

WHY are they remaking this movie? The Lynch version kicks ass! Not entirely loyal to the source material, sure, but some changes make the story BETTER for film - look at Lord of the Rings. A literal cinematic rendition of those books would have been horrible.
