Well, at least they are not Dystopian families.

Ooh, another one that got missed was the extended Shephard family from Lost. Um...make that pretty much _every_ family in Lost. Forgot about Locke's family, and Sun's family, and Hurley's family, and Juliet's family, and Ben's family, and Kate's family...come to think of it, Charlie's family and Michael's family turned out to be the least dysfunctional of all. Fat lot of good it did either of them, huh?

It has been pointed out to me that the Fringe family unit is a bit flawed, if you count the "Daddy engineered his son" subplot they haven't overtly mentioned; and that the "Sword of Truth" series which has been turned into a TV show also used the "Daddy is evil, grandpa is good but distantly stalking me throughout my childhood, fake dad died saving me, fake bro tried to kill me, " motif.

Um. Better question perhaps would be, can anyone find a non-dysfunctional family unit in Sci-Fi?

The Incredibles did end up working out their problems by the end of the movie, so do they count? Oh, and there's that Lost In Space family.

How about the Frys? His nuclear family aside, the guy is his own grandfather.

Um, technically, didn't Tarkin blow up Alderaan? Vader was an accessory to genocide at best (or worst).

    Hello..the Summers family in X-Men?

Scott's father Corsair is a space pirate. His brother Alex is a living bomb. His first wife Madelyne was clone of his girlfriend, went nuts, and tried to sacrifice their kid to demons. His second wife Jean was copied by a comic being that went batshit while she was in coma, and died again. His other brother Gabriel killed their dad and is taking over an alien empire. His son Nathan was sent to the future came back a cybernetic killing machine, along with an evil clone named Stryfe. His other kid, Rachel, came from a possible future where she was forced to hunt other mutants and is scarred, both mentally and physically. His current girlfriend is a bitch with expensive tastes, psychic powers, and very little clothing.

    That's one fucked up family!

Star Wars family would've been even more fun if we found out that Palpatine was the one who got Shmi pregnant (she was force-mindwiped afterwards), and have Boba Fett be Padmé in disguise as Carrie Fisher envisioned.

I suppose Data / Dr. Soong / Dr. Juliana Tainer / Lore / B-4 / Laal / Spot / Older Dr. Soong is an example of a malfunctional family, not a dysfunctional one.

As dysfunctional as Mulder & Scully's relationship was, emotionally distant was NEVER a problem between them. If anything, they were quite co-dependant and overly attached to each other long back while they were still "just friends".

Also, if we were going to pick BSG, the Adamas are just as messed up if not more so...

@spacepenguin: Oh yeah, M&S have always been co-dependant.

Article didn't mention baby William, kidnapped, possibly part-alien, who got sent away to be raised by others.

I always thought the Venture Family was pretty healthy, aside the cloning. Of course, having a kick-ass body guard helps keep the peace.

It speaks volumes about my childhood that the Ventures seem a rather aspirational model.

Seriously, I hate Thanksgiving (even though I have mine a month earlier) because that's when my family celebrates Festivus--especially the airing of grievances. That would make my dad, Darth Grievous.
