    I so hope this movie flops. To me it looks like Fern Gully with 10ft tall blue people. Our like that stupid animated movie which came out recently where humans invaded another planet. This movie reeks of unoriginal ideas and Star Wars prequel level CG use, as in a lot.

    Unlike your comment, which screams innovation and uniqueness.

    @Lassus:

    A spade is a spade mon ami. In my book.

    There are plenty of original ideas still in Hollywood, just none from James Cameron IMO.

    I eagerly await your next catty passive aggressive dig. :)

    @Commander Shepard: Just so I'm informed about how un-original this film is, can you tell me all the other big Hollywood films that involve giant mechs and space marines on an Alien jungle planet fighting giant creatures, winged dragons and alien races?

    Or do you just mean he borrowed elements from existing fiction and is creating a new and different film from those elements as just about every film maker ever has done.

    @Commander Shepard: The movie was always going to use a lot of CG. It is, in part, actually a CG animation movie. I suppose WALL-E "overused" CG as well, right?

    As for lack of originality, what specifically so you think Avatar is derivative of and why? And based on what? Two pieces of concept art and a couple of video game screen shots?

    And Fern Gully? Really? Are you sure you're not just a troll? :p

    @ProgHead777: The story's completely derivative of a couple of Golden Age ones (you know, books), one by Poul Anderson.

    That's what I thought of when I heard about this originally.

    Which at least means he's derived it from stuff his target audience has no clue exists, since they only know cartoons and video games.

    So... yay for more subtle plagarism?

    Yes, well. It's a movie-based video game. That always works out so well, regardless of source material.

    @TheLostVikings R.O.A.C.H.: I remember enjoying the crap out of that game, until I was doing a "rescue the hostages" side mission, and one of the hostages that was on his knees clipped into the getaway vehicle's hood, and the bad guys drove away with the guy still kneeling on the car. I laughed my ass off and returned the game the next day.

    @jchasse: I grant you permission *hand gesture*, as it is not a direct movie tie-in and has its own story. I loved playing them, too!

    If anyone mentions the Matrix video game (not MMORPG) I will shove a brick in their clocoa.
