The satellite blitz? The long-awaited movie Earth Vs. Moon is finally cranking up, and Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick explain how they pit the Moon's civilians against Earth's.

First Showing snagged an interview with these two writers, and after explaining that they want Will Smith to star in this war epic, they continued on with a few more details about their movie, which follows a civil war between a lunar colony and the folks back home:

"It's about two societies at war, but it's also about a family, not at war, but a fractured family. Half of them have gone to the moon and the other half are still on Earth and so they are on opposite sides of this conflict and we wanted to make sure that as big of movie as it's going to be, it works on a small level. It works on a personal level, the way we like to think about Zombieland working. It's just this huge post-apocalyptic landscape, but we really want it to work on an interpersonal level for just a few people who are the stars."

Picture from fabulous savers.

<![CDATA[It's Finally L.A.'s Turn To Get Crushed]]> We were wondering what would replace plague movies and dystopian futures as the next trend in movies, and it's looking like we have our answer: alien invasions and space battles. On the heels of Universal greenlighting Earth vs. Moon, Columbia Pictures is making Battle: Los Angeles, based on a spec script from Chris Bertolini (The General's Daughter). Battle: L.A. is about "a Marine platoon's encounter with an alien invasion on the streets of L.A.," and it'll have a low price tag, similar to Cloverfield. But no shaky handheld cam, promises producer Neil Moritz. [Slashfilm]

<![CDATA[Our Greatest Space Enemy Could Be Right Overhead]]> One of the writers of Monsters, Inc. is working on a new science fiction movie called Earth Vs. Moon. Universal paid high-six figures for the pitch from writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who also created Spike TV's The Joe Schmo Show and are writing a new movie, Zombieland. (Reese was a writer for Monsters, and Wernick won three Emmys for his work on TV news.) I talked to a rep at Scott Stuber, the production company overseeing the project, and they said it's just a pitch, and no script has been written yet. We'll hopefully have details about the film's satellite-blasting plot soon. [Hollywood Reporter]
