Producer Says Ender's Game Not Over |

I say this everytime io9 brings up Card - which is quite a lot: Would io9 cover an author who was openly racist? Openly anti-semitic? In general, American society tends to shun such people. We don't seem to do the same with someone who is openly intolerant of gays and lesbians.
If you want to keep covering Card, this is part of the story. I don't think it should remain something you let fester in the comments. What's io9's view?
Personally, I think that freedom of speech trumps all. And his work should be covered. That's right - even though every time his name comes up you'll hear me say I think his views are alarming and I don't want to support him.
But I think it's time to stop dodging this issue. Put it this way - didn't the EMH on Voyager destroy the medical knowledge of that historical figure who turned out to have committed medical war crimes?
That's an easier line to see, but it's exactly the same issue. Is information itself free of context? Of history? I don't know the answer but I don't think you can keep covering Card without asking the question...

Marvels current comic book might as well be story boards or pre-vis. Flawless execution. The movie will be great.

But what kind of a discussion did you want to have? Card's positions are based on religious ones--revealed religious ones--how can we even discuss this?

"How long before married people answer the dictators thus: Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn."
"Because when government is the enemy of marriage, then the people who are actually creating successful marriages have no choice but to change governments, by whatever means is made possible or necessary."
-Orson Scott Card
What we are proposing is not going to see this guy's movie because we dislike his philosophies. What he's proposing is overthrowing the democratically-elected government of his country (by violence if necessary) so that he can force his tribal superstitions on everyone, including the vast majority of the population that doesn't share them.
You're right, we're a bunch of lunatics and he's a model of restraint and clear thought.

Yes they would.

I don't like him and I think he is an asshole. This doesn't make me intolerant--it means I know how to recognize assholes.
In fact, it shows that I am, indeed, a beacon of tolerance precisely BECAUSE I don't try and stop people from reading his retarded opinions despite the fact that I know he's an asshole.

Man, there's no one lobbying to get people to like gays. We're not even really lobbying to get people to stop hating gays. Whenever anyone talks about "tolerance," we're just talking about not treating them like crap.

Learn what the word 'tolerant' means. Once again, in case you missed it, some people here are talking about not giving OSC money because they disagree with his opinions, and don't like the idea of financing his ideals. I haven't seen anybody suggest that he be shot or imprisoned or even silenced. We ARE tolerating him.
OSC has proposed replacing the democratic government of the USA with a religious tyranny. I'm not going to help him out with my pennies. Is this intolerant? Should I buy pro-Nazi hate literature to show how tolerant I am?

Think he'll go for that?

All his detractors need to HTFU and get over it.

That said, the virtual world stuff in Ender's Game would have been cool to see.

I always feel so conflicted about Card. On the one hand, I really don't like supporting a bigot in any way, if I can help it. On the other hand, his work should be able to stand on its own. As long as there are no blatantly offensive things in his work, then it deserves to stand alone.
But then I remember that I was never an Ender's Game fan, so it doesn't really matter.
