Not to mention: A new Buffy season 8 TPB. Hey, it's a big news for me, I collect this serie only in paperback (cause I started this summer. I'm not very a punctual geek)
I have to say that I'm interested to see what Peter and Max will be like; the idea of a Fables prose novel intrigues me.
If you don't really want to pick up the Fables reissue, there's a preview of Peter and Max at that link above in PDF format. The look reminds me of an L. Frank Baum book, which is just one more reason to be excited.
As an aside, why hyperlink to tags for things where the only result for the tag is the one story it appears in?
@tk.: Thanks for the link! I have to say, I am VERY impressed by how many good stories Bill Willingham's come up with so far, and he certainly doesn't seem to be drying up yet. I never would've guessed I would become such a huge fan of his based on his pre-Fables work.
@van_line: It's a fun idea with some real talent behind it. I thought all the stories were good and the layout was cool. However, the $4 price tag, especially for a newspaper, is not going to bring in any new readers. It might even scare away a bunch.
So will I buy it? Sure, I liked it a lot. I just think it'd of been better served being a supplemental in USA today or whatever. Something to promote how comics aren't "BiFF ZAP", which we all know haven't been for years, but the mass population doesn't. Show the real talent behind these characters.
In my opinion, Wednesday Comics could be for new fans what the Ultimate Universe did for Spiderman around the time of the first movie. It could have been that catalyst, but as it is, it's a $4 newspaper with some serious talent on it.
I claimed "cool gadgets" because she does often get to use some nifty magical gear, cool weaponry and such. I'm on the fence with the last one... she does become a legend among Slayers, but not sure if it counts. Then again, the Slayer is a legendary being, in and of herself.
Meredith, io9, et al., I think it's time for io9 to address this issue head on with a separate article. I've seen io9 jump gleefully into conflict about all sorts of issues.
I say this everytime io9 brings up Card - which is quite a lot: Would io9 cover an author who was openly racist? Openly anti-semitic? In general, American society tends to shun such people. We don't seem to do the same with someone who is openly intolerant of gays and lesbians.
If you want to keep covering Card, this is part of the story. I don't think it should remain something you let fester in the comments. What's io9's view?
Personally, I think that freedom of speech trumps all. And his work should be covered. That's right - even though every time his name comes up you'll hear me say I think his views are alarming and I don't want to support him.
But I think it's time to stop dodging this issue. Put it this way - didn't the EMH on Voyager destroy the medical knowledge of that historical figure who turned out to have committed medical war crimes?
That's an easier line to see, but it's exactly the same issue. Is information itself free of context? Of history? I don't know the answer but I don't think you can keep covering Card without asking the question...
What a tempest in an exquisite Julian Schnabel teapot! Of course he's a twit and the experience of his life will be...less...because of his views. But I don't think he hates anyone. That would show on the page. I also don't think that people who have not spent time in the film industry, particularly Los Angeles (Vancouver, The City...bliss.), can appreciate how extraordinarily conservative the movie business actually is. Twits, jerks, fools? Of course. Hate? If you find it you had it inside yourself to begin with.
Marvels current comic book might as well be story boards or pre-vis. Flawless execution. The movie will be great.
Classic Liberal obfuscation. Those who disagree with you politically are bigots, racists, and homophobes. No tolerance or discussion of the issues necessary. It IS a great time saver.
@RAHfanboy: Well, only when my political position is one that advocates equal rights for homosexuals. Then, indeed, if someone disagrees with me politically the odds are good that it's because he's a homophobe.
But what kind of a discussion did you want to have? Card's positions are based on religious ones--revealed religious ones--how can we even discuss this?
I just love how people can claim to be open minded and egalitarian except when someone else's views conflict with their own. I'm not saying that I agree with his position, but the man is hardly the maniacal hate monger some of you people seem to be making him out to be. A large portion of the world's population would agree with him, would you condemn them all regardless of context? It seems hypocritical to claim to be the beacons of tolerance and then pick and choose who you apply that tolerance to. In some ways Card displays more tolerance and restraint than those of you posting here, while he may not be a proponent of gay marriage he doesn't sling juvenile insults.
"How long before married people answer the dictators thus: Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn."
"Because when government is the enemy of marriage, then the people who are actually creating successful marriages have no choice but to change governments, by whatever means is made possible or necessary."
-Orson Scott Card
What we are proposing is not going to see this guy's movie because we dislike his philosophies. What he's proposing is overthrowing the democratically-elected government of his country (by violence if necessary) so that he can force his tribal superstitions on everyone, including the vast majority of the population that doesn't share them.
You're right, we're a bunch of lunatics and he's a model of restraint and clear thought.
@Harrison_Bergeron: What are you talking about? Who's being intolerant of him? Am I burning his books? Stopping people from reading his interviews? Trying to limit his civil liberties?
I don't like him and I think he is an asshole. This doesn't make me intolerant--it means I know how to recognize assholes.
In fact, it shows that I am, indeed, a beacon of tolerance precisely BECAUSE I don't try and stop people from reading his retarded opinions despite the fact that I know he's an asshole.
@Darkweave: I wasn't speaking of the US, but if you go into many of the less developed parts of the world you'd find like minds to Card. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Card, I think his views are outmoded and presumptuous. I just think its funny that the same people that by and large presume to be open minded aren't as tolerant as they think. I don't pretend to be that universally accepting. I have deeply held beliefs that conflict with others deeply held beliefs and realize that there isn't a fairy tale world where everyone can be right. I'm saying that those rallying behind the banner of tolerance have to extend it to those they don't get along with as well or risk being labeled hypocrites.
@Harrison_Bergeron: Tolerance doesn't mean liking other people. It just means tolerating them. And, in many cases, not oppressing them.
Man, there's no one lobbying to get people to like gays. We're not even really lobbying to get people to stop hating gays. Whenever anyone talks about "tolerance," we're just talking about not treating them like crap.
@Harrison_Bergeron: "I just think its funny that the same people that by and large presume to be open minded aren't as tolerant as they think."
Learn what the word 'tolerant' means. Once again, in case you missed it, some people here are talking about not giving OSC money because they disagree with his opinions, and don't like the idea of financing his ideals. I haven't seen anybody suggest that he be shot or imprisoned or even silenced. We ARE tolerating him.
OSC has proposed replacing the democratic government of the USA with a religious tyranny. I'm not going to help him out with my pennies. Is this intolerant? Should I buy pro-Nazi hate literature to show how tolerant I am?
@snodipous: I thought I was well versed in the new meaning of tolerance. I know the old one: that still had something to do with the root word. You never can tell in this pc culture however. I thought the new definition had gotten all mixed up with total acceptance what with anyone and everyone expressing any differing opinion being labeled homophobic, bigoted, racist, etc. Isn't someone that uses homophobic slurs intolerant even though they tolerate the persons that they target with their language? If that person is intolerant because they do not approve of another's values than what makes slandering anyone, including Card, because of personal value systems not intolerance? By all means, don't buy his books. If all we're going for with "tolerance" is live and let live than mission accomplished.
@Harrison_Bergeron: Tell you what. I'll agree to let Orson Scott Card get away with just using racial slurs, if he promises not to provide money and support for people trying to impose their personal value system on others. What's it to him whether the gays get married, after all? It's not like anyone's twisting the arm of the Mormon church to perform the ceremony.
Cool news, I hope any film adaption lives up to the original book...a tall order without extensive CGI, if not the entire film. I could almost see Pixar doing it.
