This type of story could sit independently of BSG. It really feels like the writers wanted to explore the "copy" idea further and the studio execs said they couldn't take the risk on a new series with no market presence. Hence, "Caprica".
I, for one, am looking forward to Caprica. I also look forward to watching frustrated viewers writhe and wail and gnash their teeth about it.
Remember kids: it's not enough to simply not like something; you have to derive pleasure in mocking and ridiculing those who do. Where else are you going to get a prudish sense of superiority from?
@Forsakenchild: Constructive criticism presumes that anyone's paying attention. Whether I write "that's dumb" is as fruitful as if I write a 4K word essay on why it's dumb and how it can be better.
Now, personally, I think there's room for both, but not because it's constructive, because it's more interesting to read. All the same, I'm not going to begrudge anyone a "FAIL."

Unfortunately, pre-existing property means pre-existing fanbase.
