    Funny, I can recall years worth of exhibitions and performances at the space, and it's never been really 'neglected' in all that time:

    @James Ryan: Oh okay.... the NYT refers to it as long-neglected and says the conservancy is trying to revitalize it with art events and exhibits. I guess this isn't their first stab at it, just the most alien.

    I'm not really sure why you'd add a poopload of spices to an art display, but I'm sure it's justified as "adding an olfactory element to the visual and textual experience."

    I can see the Armory from my office window. From time to time I wonder what life is like in the parallel-universe Manhattans in which it houses active-duty military units and their paraphernalia, instead of stuff like this and the antiques show.

    @Rasselas: That military life is still there. The 53d Army Liaison Team of the New York Army National Guard carries on the legacy of the 7th Regiment, which was the first unit HQ'ed there. The 53d ALT recently shipped out to Iraq, but their deployment ceremony had to be held in an auditorium at adjacent Hunter College (ironic, considering the politics of most Hunter students and faculty), because the football-field-sized drill hall was booked for another (non-military)event.
