In reply to Why Bryan Singer's Return To The X-Men Is A Bad Idea
First Class wasn't supposed to be an origin movie, it was always described as more of a New Mutants movie (regardless of what "First Class" implies).

There is no point in making an X-Men origins movie without the original 5 X-Men, and Singer himself has made that an impossibility by casting Iceman and Angel as children to Cyclops and Jean Grey's adults, with Hank McCoy being a generation older than them, but that part can be ignored (truly, Kelsey Grammar as Beast is the most inspired casting ever in a comic book movie, and the only great part of X3. You may argue Stewart as Xavier, but while undeniably awesome, it isn't really inspired, but obvious and necessary)

The First Class name could mean the first class of young mutants specifically trained as warriors(Which is how I interpreted it after learning it didn't mean the actual first first class), and could focus on the younger students from the movie- Iceman, Angel, Colossus, Shadowcat, Jubilee, Siren, whoever else was in there.

Save the "Origins" titles for the older characters from the movies like Magneto and Storm(after you recast her) and a good Wolverine origins movie, like the Japan story Hugh Jackman was pitching a while back. If he gets that made I'll forgive him for being over 6' tall. (nah, I let that go after how good he was in the first one and how brutally awesome he was in the second one)

See, it sounds like there have been a lot of insane superheroes/villains with godlike power running amok the last couple decades--but really every problem has just been called by the same two or three people.

Props on the exhaustively compiled list!

Also, additional props for including the Dracula-vampire invasion in Captain Britain, one of my favorite Marvel titles in the last couple years.

@IraeNicole: I've always figured that it would just become another daily event. You would just have a clause in your insurance policy that covers invasion of god-aliens who have come to steal the earth's blood to fuel their death ray and that would be the end of it.

    @OW-Holmes:Bringer of Fear:
You should check out Marvels. I think there were four of them. Kurt Busiek did the writing and it was painted by the illustrious Alex Ross. Reason being? Most of the plot line is from the perspective of a photo-journalist living in America when super heroes first show up. It shows the excitement and the terror. As the book comes to an end, the people of New York have seen so many wild, outlandish things that Sheldon (the journalist) almost seems annoyed by super-events. It is a lot of fun to read and gorgeous to say the least.

Wow... Pretty awesome list! Missing the world-shaking events of BPRD, though, I'd think that title with its mixture of genres would be pretty much the poster-child of io9 comicsmania, but YMMV I guess.

It's worth wondering why Fox seems scared to make movies set after X-Men: The Last Stand. Yes, it was a bad movie, but that bad?

Yes. Yes it was. To this day it is the only movie I have ever wanted to walk out of.

Seriously? You're citing The OC, Chuck and Gossip Girl as positive mentions on someone's resume for a property that had more depth than all of them even with people shooting rays from their eyes?

@AngriestGeek: I agree. I think Singer coming back to the franchise is MILES better than Schwartz taking it over.

You KNOW that if he had, there would be an article decrying the "OC"ification of X-Men...

It's worth wondering why Fox seems scared to make movies set after X-Men: The Last Stand. Yes, it was a bad movie, but that bad?

Making a sequel to X3 means that the fourth installment has to do without Professor X, Phoenix, Cyclops, and must deal with depowered Rogue and Magneto. (Not that they couldn't bring 'em back, but that makes for some weak storytelling.)

It's also a case of diminishing returns and a lowered production cost. A fourth installment is likely to be less of a success than a reboot. By constrast, a reboot means Fox doesn't have to coax Jackman, Paquin, Berry, Stewart, McKellan, Grammer, Page, et al. to return, when they're likely going to be costly and reluctant.

@Whitworthian: Professor X returned in the end of the film. Also, Magneto demonstrated that the serum only lasted a few weeks, so both he and Rogue would be back to their powered-up states.
Cyclops never did much for me as a character, and James Marsden never really brought much to the character to begin with. Guy had like seven lines in the three films.
There are dozens and dozens of stories in the X-men universe to choose from, and there's nothing stopping anyone form doing any of those storylines.

@Smeagol92055: Sure... there's nothing stopping anyone from adapting any of the wonderful stories that appeared in the comics.

For some reason, though, screenwriters in Hollywood don't really want to do that.

I liked the tone of the first 2. I'm completely fine with someone as gifted as Singer continuing to direct X-Men. Not sure why it's a bad thing.

Still I'd like to see a new take on Batman that didn't involve Nolan.

Singer will do a good job of executing a story that really does not need to be told. They should've hired Schwartz to just write x4 (or turn the next Wolverine movie into 'Basically X4) because the movies feature young people anyway, so there's always a 'new class' anyway.

Let's just enjoy the Marvel features Marvel is handling itself--it will save us from further Fox-inspired disappointment (though I believe Lauren Donner--or whatever--has her heart in the right place).

I've already said elsewhere. Just use Bishop or Cable in the traitor storyline if the franchise gets back on track and create your alternate "Star Trek" timeline. Then it's all new and different and you can redo the mutant cure and Dark Phoenix storylines differently with new stuff as well.

@WestMantooth: Yes, there are so many ways to remedy X3, which sucked, but didn't ruin the franchise by any means (I believe we're still in the process of destroying this franchise). They just need to grow some balls, get the band back together, get some new members, and make with the awesome.
