And Nome’s current population is about 3,600 so hundreds of missing people would defiantly be noticed and reported on, unless it is a conspiracy of course.

So fake that it's real?
I dunno...
At least they didn't have Milla's character screaming "THIS IS NOT HAPPENINGGGG!!!" #fourthkind

Maybe it's like what you're saying, though -- these filmmakers, deep down, don't really think their subject is interesting enough for anyone to have made a genuine documentary about, so they feel a subconscious need to juice things up and add drama, which translates to a sense of wrongness in the finished product. If even the filmmakers don't actually believe in what they're making, why would we? #fourthkind

Because the target audience is UFO believers, who are already highly trained to assert the authenticity of poorly faked footage that insults the audience's intelligence?

I'm more disappointed that the marketers didn't give skeptics a run for their money creating an alternate universe-type campaign than irked that anyone might've been fooled into thinking it was real. An AU web presence would at least have been fun to play with and created a buzz, and it feels like maybe they intended to do it, but then went half-assed and ended up where they are now: looking like they were outright trying to dupe people by lying in adverts.
