So basically, if Dollhouse becomes more like Heroes, it will get more episodes. But if it becomes more like Firefly, it will get canceled? So should be be hoping for better or worse storylines?
It's strange, but the most Whedonian show on the air right now is Bones. Instaneously lovable characters, great humor, relationship that ends badly or never come to a satisfying conclusion, weird change-of-pace episodes (Stewie Griffin and Booth coma fantasy), a strong female lead, everything in it screams Joss Whedon. But yet, it is not. Hey, Joss, maybe you can write an episode of Bones after Dolhouse? I'm sure Boreanaz would be happy. Hey, maybe Booth and Brennan has to investiagte in a Goth club, and some girl think Booth could do a fine vampire.
Or better yet, Booth and Brennan investigate a Buffy convention and everybody thinks Booth looks like Angel. Or they must go undercover at this convention, thus Brennan dress as Buffy and Booth as Spike (yes, pun intended).
I'm still amazed that shows like "Firefly" and "Dollhouse" have such trouble, while something like "Heroes" can continue to get full season orders, even after the sorry excuse for the last two seasons. I have Tivo'd Heroes so far this season, but I'm honestly scared to watch it. I've been burned so bad by that show that, lesbian kiss or not, there are other shows way ahead in my catch-up queue taking priority over trying Heroes again...
@AZTriGuy: Heroes is still going because it had a larger fan base to begin with. It's not as "sci fi" as Firefly or Dollhouse, so it appeals to more people before when they decide to watch the show. Also, Heroes had a very good first season, and the second wasn't bad.
Heroes is better this season than last, although the lesbian kiss wasn't really all that great (maybe there's another one later?)
Good news.l I wasn't expecting the show to stretch to 20 episodes this season anyhows so if we get the 13 that is cool. Though naturally I'd love to see the show renewed.
Personally I'm more a fan of shorter seasoned shows as overall the quality is improved. The first season of BSG was pretty much flawless, but in season 2 stinkers like 'Black market' appeared because of the shorter production cycle as well as the writer having to come up with a lot more ideas. Better to go for quality rather than quantity. I suspect Fringe would be a lot better if it was a 13 episode series as well.
I enjoy this show. It's not perfect but it's entertaining. It hasn't really even aired that many episodes yet; if you ignore the episodes that had executive meddling, it's just hitting a regular half-season. Is Eliza's acting a bit weak at times? Yes, but not so much that it ruins the show for me. I do wish it were more ensemble-oriented but it's her production company, she's the lead, so be it.
I have to say, Enver is the real stand out of this show for sure. However this breaks down, I really hope he enters the stable of actors Whedon pulls on.
Epitaph One was probably the best episode of the series so far. How weird is that?
That said, it isn't Firefly. It isn't the greatest show on the air. If it gets canceled, I won't rage. Heck, Browncoats are still redlining about Firefly-- & they should, too, that was a heck of a show.
@mordicai: Oh, I think Dichen Lachman is pretty great, too. She has to play second fiddle to Eliza Dushku for contractual reasons, I guess, but she pulls off the different character every week rather better, I think. I don't think Eliza is terrible, that said.
Basically, I agree though. Firefly deserved another five seasons. Dollhouse has been interesting and I have enjoyed it, but two short seasons will pretty much give me closure.
I'm planning on sticking around for shits and giggles but if they cancel it, and I believe they will, I won't be heartbroken. The acting is not very good and the stories are hit and miss (miss for the most part).
@omnibus_spiritus: I'm with you. After watching the first two episodes of this season (still haven't gotten to 3 yet) I realized how little I care about this show now. The more Echo there is, the less emotionally engaged I am.
Since this hasn't filled the TSCC shaped hole in my heart, I can see it go without remorse. It's simply not the best of what Whedon could be offering us and I'd rather he was spending his time giving me something better.
@ExtensionOfBob: As much as it isn't fair to tie Dollhouse to TSCC (think of all of the even less worthy crap they could have cut and saved both), and as much as I enjoy Dollhouse and pretty much everything else Joss has done....
...I'd give it up in a hot moment if we could get TSCC back in its place.
@Chuck: Hear hear! I wasn't prejudiced against DH because Fox canceled TSCC. But TSCC just completely grew on me until I went from being like "it's ok, let's watch it" to not being able to wait to see it each wee and being so fascinated with the actors and the psychology between them. It's just a shame good shows like TSCC and Firefly get canceled and mediocre shows stay on and on...
Fox could try the show on another night of the week that people might actually dedicate to watching tv. But then again this is the same network that destroyed Firefly before it even started by not airing the episodes in the order they were meant to be.
Lets face fact. Joss has given us some great television. Dollhouse is not among them. Firefly was wrongly canceled because it was a great show that was never given a fighting chance. If Dollhouse gets canceled it will be because it was comparatively sub-par storytelling with a wooden lead actress and not enough people wanted to watch. Fox has earned my ire due to the fates of Firefly and TSCC, but when they cancel Dollhouse the only people out for war will be rabid Whedonites.
@Harrison_Bergeron: Thank you. I was worried there would be a bunch of defenders here talking about how Fox didn't give it a fair chance. I believe that even at it's worst Firefly still did better than Dollhouse so no one can say Dollhouse was mistreated.
@Jesse Mrozowski: You might not like Dollhouse but still better than Heroes, 90 percent of the CW, Lost (please explain the Polar Bear). I think NO ONE gave it a fair shot cus it was getting the "FOX" treatment.
@Harrison_Bergeron:
After the demise of shows like Dead Like Me, Middleman, and Pushing Daisies, I really cannot buy the whole 'ratings equate to quality' rubric.
@Belabras ate my dingo!: But I have to agree with Harrison on this particular show. I am a fairly rabid Wheatonite, but I am starting to loathe Dollhouse because it could be so much better than it is. At this point, if Firefly cannot be resurrected from the grave, I with Joss would just move on to his next cool idea. I never thought I'd say that about a Whedon show and I don't even hate particularly on Eliza or any of the cast, but its just a weak show and the ratings - in this case, not always with every show- reflect that, IMO.
Yeah there is still wrath from Terminator my little sister is still trying to get the explosives I bought after they cancelled Firefly so she can go to LA and "have a talk with Fox!" Maybe I give them to her maybe I wont we will see how the season ends.
With the exception of Firefly, Whedon's shows have had excellent series finales. I expect less from Dollhouse, but only because the other three (Buffy pretty much had 2 of them) are impossible to top.

Although it never had a TV finale, I though Serenity made a nice ending to Firefly.
