Also, for free audiobooks check out :

    www.podiobooks.com

They have some awesome stuff. I highly recommend the work of Scott Sigler, J.C Hutchins and Nathan Lowell :D

It's a really great site. Especially if, for whatever reason, you like your books in audio format (visual impairment, etc).

@tetracycloide: That's what I was thinking... I'll pick out The Two Towers first. House Atreides will make a good starter.

@crashedpc - Haifisch: the second novel in a three part series? why pick it out when you'll need something decent to tempure the stench of all that burning crap.

Thanks so much for the resources. Another I would like to share that I use personally is [www.truly-free.org]

The books are usually best viewed in either Word or notepad 2, and there is a limit of 5 books per month that are able to be borrowed (tracked by IP). It has more than just science-fiction, though I primarily use it to read Asimov, King, and Orson Scott Card novels. Take a look! And respect the downloading terms: 5 per month, delete them when you're done. You're not buying or stealing, you're borrowing from a library.

(Check out the forum community too!)

    Thank you!

Also, I got a kindle from my grams last Christmas, and amazon.com does randomly have free kindle books to download, but I'm not sure they're an option without a kindle. And some libraries now have online books you can 'check out' on your computer, I know my dinky town library does, so I'm imagining other towns with populations over 8k do too if you look hard enough.

@theCrippleCricket: Good call -- amazingly enough, there are often some very good freebies on the "Kindle Best Seller's List"

I've discovered a couple three new authors that I really like that way, and have gone on to actually pay money for some of their other stuff (which I suspect is entirely the point behind the free ones.)

@Chuck: Me too! Although the downfall of my free kindlebook obsession is this weird penchant for tacky romance novels. I dunno what's happening to me, I tried to say it was just because I'm poor and they were free, but then I BOUGHT the sequel to this one about a victorian lady and her strapping, brooding detective lover and I realized I have a problem. A burning, corset-ripping, undulating problem...

There's a ton of free short science fiction on the Project Gutenberg site - someone is sorting through the short stories form the early days to see which ones have expired copyright and which ones haven't, so they can post the former. Some awesome stuff there.
