So I'm going to have to be the first to mention this looks like Fallout 3: The Movie? Color scheme, design, lone traveler, the GECK/book...
Well, that book better damn well be Somebodies Guide to Gardening, because if it ends up being the bible, then the movie instantly drops a letter grade.
@Paul_Is_Drunk: I'm playing through Fallout 3 for the first time right now, and that's what I was thinking the whole time. The shot of him standing on the broken overpass/bridge was especially reminiscent of it.
I'm looking forward to this though (I love post-apocalyptic). I'm really hoping they do something original/creative/non-religious message with the book.
Has io9 ever done a post comparing post-apocalyptic movies to westerns? Or is this the only post-apoc movie that (seemingly) uses a lot of Western tropes? Or, third option, am I just making off the wall comparisons?
@Trystero: The comparison is completely solid. Not everything fits the mold, but for the most part you have people trying to survive in rather inhospitable settings with bleak landscapes, strangers riding (or in this case walking) into town bringing life or death, isolation and the social struggles that ensue. Not a movie, but Fallout 3 is certainly a Western story, just a Western with more ray guns and mutants.
The biggest difference I would see is that in a post-apocalyptic story, civilization has been lost, while in a Western, the thriving world of the characters' pasts still exists, just very far away.
Looks awesome. So awesome that the only criticism I have for the trailer is that arrows do not fly straight like that. Even the metal ones bend as they travel to the targets.
@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: I really hope it isn't the Bible they are talking about. Why would that be a hard thing to collect in post apocalyptic America?
@NerD: Blattella: Yeah, I thought that, too, when I saw it in the trailer. If it's just the last surviving Bible or something, that would be uber-lame. Let's hope it's more than that.
@NerD: Blattella: That bothers me, too. Hopefully it's not just a hotel Bible, but the trailer makes it look that way.
Despite the unbelievability of a Bible becoming rare, even in a post-apocalyptic setting, I'll give the movie a pass if it's more about imagining a violent Old Testament nation-building story taking place in a "stone age" future as opposed to the Bible simply being some magical, hope-giving MacGuffin.
@TemporalSword: It's literally the best-selling book of all time. There are hojillions of copies floating around the entire planet. The idea of it becoming so rare as to be worth all that fuss in only 30 years is extremely hard to swallow.
It looks like it'll be a fun movie to watch, no doubt, but its plot has now left me very cold.
@Aidan_: people seem to be judgeing a book by its cover here. whos to say it isnt a bible that has other information written into it, such as a location and pass codes for a government store house/bunker etc.

Mila Kunis in shades looks a lot like a young Angelina Jolie.
