I wish Harlequin would start up a sci-fi/romance imprint. Because, oh the smut I would write.

    Inter-species love!

...what, I've gone too far? Awwww.

Sadly, there are enough suburban soccer mom types* with the means to do this that it will actually succeed. They probably wrote back in college, maybe even had some success getting their work from that time published in the school's literary magazine. Every since, they've "had an idea" that they "just know" would be a bestseller.

What they will produce will probably be poorly melded mashes of different stories that are meandering, pedantic and stocked heavily with cliche.

Once the Magnum Opus is complete, it can be sold to their friends, who will be expected to gush at the literary genius they are best friends with. If those friends demur, well then, they must not be a friend at all!

    * I freely admit that was a gratuitous stereotype. You could just as easily substitute another, for example, Black-Clad, Galluoise-Smoking Coffee Shop Literist, or even Sports-Blogger-Who-Knows-The-True-Story-Of-His-Team's-Failure and be just as correct.

Better yet, just send me the money. I can put it to better use and I'll even send you photos the crazy ass weekend in Las Vegas (extra if you want photos from the strip clubs) that I went on with your money.

If you fall for this scam (like anyone who sends their information to a Nigerian Prince) then you don't really need it anyway.

@ManchuCandidate: I would never fall for this or the Nigerian Prince scam. I mean, real money only comes from English barristers who have found me after long and tedious genealogical searches. I received a lovely email from one just the other day and expect a large deposit in my account by the weekend.

A solid half of my Lansdale collection is from Subterranian. While I absolutely HATE, HATE, HATE the cover art on pretty much every one, it's nice to know those limited are out there.

Ramsey Campbell is "underrated"...? By who? He's won tons of awards, is considered a living legend by the horror and fantasy community, and is "Britain's most respected living horror writer" according to the Oxford Companion to English Literature.

Some presses you did not mention:

Ash-Tree Press - an important steward of the classic ghost story tradition and publishers of much acclaimed new work as well.

Earthling Publications - releasing loads of great books, including a healthy chunk of the work of Glen Hirshberg, one of the most acclaimed authors of horror/dark/weird fiction to emerge this decade.

Shroud Publications - still very young, but drawing more and more attention to both its flagship magazine and its book line.

@craigdbpatton: I really need to give Campbell another shot. I tried and tried to finish THE COUNT OF ELEVEN about 15 years ago and it was chore. A great big nasty one at that, like latrine after the entire barracks were on a 3-day bender of cheap Shlitz and Pabst....

Around page 80 I finally gave up.

I think part of it has to be the pride of work well done. In steampunk you know that Captain Nemo's submarine isn't going to have a faulty starter: it will be a handmade, beautifully tooled piece of equipment.

Huh? I believe the attraction here is for machines who aren't necessarily reliable but clearly idiosyncratic.

@Chris Barrus: Agreed. It won't be mass-produced, so it will seem prettier, but it won't be any less faulty. Likely to break down more often, in fact, and be much harder to replace than standardized equipment.

Ysabel Wilce is fantastic in all senses of the word. Cannot recommend her books starting with "Flora Segunda" highly enough.

Read them yourself, give them to your favorite tween and teens, esp. girls.
