Now it's all movies and stuff, but I grew up READING this wonderful genre, and I think the best is still the written word.

    Maybe that's just me. I'm old. :)

Who's to say that consuming SF or reality-based fantasy doesn't CLOSE your mind in some respects? I'm thinking of the "CSI effect," where juries in criminal cases just can't believe that forensic science yields indeterminate results. Gil Grissom always pins the real killer, so why can't you, Mr. Fancy Pants DNA Expert?

All this talk of how sci-fi shapes us leads me to quote Young Frankenstien-

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: For the experiment to be a success, all of the body parts must be enlarged.

Inga: His veins, his feet, his hands, his organs vould all have to be increased in size.

    Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Exactly.

Inga: He vould have an enormous schwanzstucker.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: That goes without saying.

    Inga: Voof.

Igor: He's going to be very popular.

@Belabras: So, just to confirm, you're saying that reading sci-fi leads us to have moose knuckles? Which is true, but I just wanted to make sure that's what you're saying.

Like a rorschach test, what you take away from the quote may say more about you than about the quote itself.

Whoo, I've been reading sci-fi since I could read, so... I think it's definitely molded my brain. I think that's the reason why sometimes I have different perspective than some of my friends; I just look at things differently. Either that, or I'm insane. I can't really tell anymore.

@crashedpc: That's my experience too, and I think having broken out of the shared reality of my childhood -- i.e. whatever was on TV last night ... definitely helped me become a different (not to say better) person than my peers.

@Sproing: I vastly prefer being different than better. Simply cuz the world is so much more interesting when tinged with a hint of weird. Being better makes the world kinda boring sometimes when you have to deal with, ehm, lesser beings.
