    It's hard to believe nobody's already made a movie about this.

    By my quick calculation, 240 cubic miles of ash would cover 1,267,200 square miles 1 foot deep.

    Unless the article was supposed to read 240 miles cubed, which would be a whole 'nother thing all together.

    "Hey-hey Boo-Boo, let's destroy North America with a pyroclastic cloud of searing death!"

    "I dunno, Yogi. Won't the Ranger get awful mad?"

    I don't if this would be such a bad thing. The ash would circulate in the atmosphere for a few decades and would cool the planet quite a bit. I mean, this is exactly what scientists are proposing to cool things down - inject absorbent or reflective particles into the atmosphere.

    In fact, maybe we should look into ways to make this happen on a smaller scale...

    @twophrasebark: Then again, it might be good that we have warmed the planet up. We may have diverted another Ice Age from happening. And be able to keep it from happening. (Some scientist's are saying...)

    @Kakkoister:

    Exactly.

    I personally think global warming is going to be a disaster, but I think it's interesting when people say it's "unnatural".

    What is unnatural? We're natural. We're part of the Earth. Global warming is as natural as beavers damming a river. We are changing things. We might end up decimating ourselves, but... unnatural?

    I don't know about that.

    There's already one movie out about this called Supervolcano. Its, as one site put it, an edudrama, but it isn't half bad, and actually does a decent job of explaining about this entire thing. The IMDB page is here... [www.imdb.com]

    @Woden501: it was surprisingly informative and surprisingly good, which had me fearing an eruption for a long time after seeing it.

    It's been due for a long time, and could easily be due for a long time still.

    BTW, 240 square miles is pretty much nothing. It's not as if Yellowstone is in the middle of Manhattan.

    @Klebert L. Hall: You're right, Klebert. 240 square miles is even less than the area flattened by Mt St Helens in 1980. The problem is that the article contains a typo.

    It should read "240 cubic miles of hot ash". Enough to cover the entire north american continent in a nice thick layer. The eruption before that ejected almost three times that much.

    Surely the Bush administration will see an opportunity here to repair their tarnished repurtation and rescure mankind by placing 100 well-placed nuclear bombs to let the steam out.
