I have to wonder if, in the world of District 9, there's prawn-themed "blackface" and if it involves more than just putting the head of a mop over your mouth to look like tentacles. Or faceticles or whatever they're called. Mandibles. #district9
#10 (Generic Alien V4) kind of looks like a Looney Tunes character who was blown up by a bomb. I can almost imagine the *tink*tink* sound of him blinking. #district9
If they'd made it in the Sixties, they could have used real prawns and some stopmotion, like the gila monsters used as stand-ins for dinosaurs. #district9
@LastAndLeast: I think the aliens were insectoid intentionally to be off-putting. It makes it harder to be sympathetic to them if they are not cute and cuddly so the emotions of the movie are deeper. George Lucas once said that it was easy to create emotion in the audience, just kill a dog on camera. This is sort of the opposite. #district9
The first thing that came to mind was the Vogons' ships from from Hitchhiker's Guide; "It looked like it was not so much designed as congealed" (apologies to Doug Adams)
I like the original idea he had that after 20 years, the ship would have graffiti and advertisements plastered across the ship's surface. I love combining everyday mundanity with the fantastic and out-of-this-world. But I think the gray, drab look suited it to create that looming and imposing feature in the sky. If they make a sequel, it'll be a sad movie without it.
Hopefully the DVD/Blue Ray special editions will have all this art work and more. Also the District 9 short which ive seen on youtube. Its just awesome. Here it is for anyone whos never seen it.
@Grey_Area: I have a miniature Man Melter. Yes, I do. Because I am awesome. Also, because I have an awesome friend who bought it for me (thanks, Roger Chang!).
I've had a fascination with the Steampunk subgenre since I first experienced it as a youth when I found a copy of Moorcock's Warlord of the Air in 1979, I was never the same. But recently I've met fervent adherents of the Steampunk "lifestyle" and shudder at their ignorant worship of a useless fashion statement.
These folks feel that a technologically advanced 19th Century CE would bring some sort of lovely, lacey, egalitarian utopia. Sorry, but the racist, colonial ambitions of a souped-up Victorian Age fueled by the Industrial Revolution would only create a Glorious Steamy Dystopia of untold sooty horror.
"Imagine a patent leather boot grinding on a human tongue, forever."
ENGLAND PREVAILS!
Blimey Guv'ner, Goggles 'n' Gaslights! Fancy a game of Centerfugial Bumblepuppy upon my Glorious Airship?
@Grey_Area: Just to make it clear, are you saying that Steampunk's history is whitewashed or that some people who do the cosplay business are misinformed? Because a lot of the steampunk I've read makes it clear that it is in no way a utopia. Like, remember the very end of The Difference Engine when it has The Eye or whatever that makes england a living hell?
As much as I appreciate looking at the aesthetic properties of $teampunk's cosplay adherents, I'd rather read groovy pieces from Blaylock, Jeter, Stephenson, Lake, or Braak. It's a sub-genre worthy of growth. Mossy, rust-encrusted growth.

I'm liking the restrained, almost 80's-esque design for that ship. #district9

If this is a female prawn, I'm wondering what they had in mind for the male... #district9
