"Imagine being able to control every aspect of your phone, including the very network where you make telephone calls. It seems bizarrely revolutionary."

Hey, this is a standard in Europe. You just obtain a SIM card from your operator of choice, put it in your cellphone and you're ready to go. Doesn't seem that revolutionary to me :-)

I love the banner that says "Camp like a Pirate" for its grammatical ambiguity.

Yeah, I don't really know that I'm excited about the idea of being able to control every aspect of my cellphone.

It'd just be one more vast field of information in which I would have to make decisions for which I am completely unqualified.

Now that sounds like the most awesome racecar game ever! Do the brakes only work if you make squealing & screeching sounds?

I want one for my nephews!

@Lobishomen: No, obviously. But this is an international gathering, and the CCC folks (from Germany) invented the Datenklo. So that's what everybody calls it.

Is it just me or does this seem incredibly wasteful? Isn't there a way to erase sensitive data without harming the drive?

That way, even old low end drives could given to poor schools or third world kids, or something.

Or failing that, can't the drives be dismantled and properly recycled, instead of shredded into bits of mixed but inseparable materials?

excellent. with SarbOx and some of the new Payment Card Industry (PCI) regulations, disposal is becoming a big deal for a lot of companies. i work for a company that is subject to both sarbox and pci, and right now we've got a badassed degausser, but the shredder would be way more fun. plus it would work on non-magnetic media.

@regis: Mrs. Overclock (etc.) and I have a rather large box in the basement of the Palatial Overclock Estate containing every single hard drive from every computer we've ever owned. This would solve our storage dilemma.
