Right now I'm reading the rather tame book:
"Haunted San Francisco: Ghost Stories From the City's Past" by Rand Richards.
Which actually has newspaper stories of real hauntings mixed it with spooky tall tales.

I also recommend The Best of H. P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre as one fo the best horror anthologies.
