this is from an "All about Turkey" website, but it looks legit. if i am reading this correctly (and the site is correct), doesn't that mean that our Batman used the name first?

Excellent idea! I vote that George Clooney and Joel Schumacher take the hit for this.

Dude...what about Springfield? There are some States that have _two_ of them! Actually, Ohio is the worst, with Springfield, East Springfield, and then 11 friggen Springfield Townships on top of that.

Bati Raman is the name of the mountain chain, not the city (or the province, or the river). Those are all actually named "Batman" after the mountains. Batman (city) existed as a village prior to the 1950's, but there's no mention of when it was founded. However, since Turkey was formed from the Ottoman Empire as a result of WWI, it's probable that the Batman province was formed at that time (the village-that-became-a-city might have existed prior to the formation of Turkey).
But the problem is that the copyright isn't on the word, it's on the name. You can legally be a "batman" if, by that, you mean someone who wields a bat. No copyright issues there. And since it's pretty clearly documented that the name of the city does not come from "man-who-dresses-up-as-a-bat-for-nocturnal-crimefighting-purposes", I expect this will get kicked with extreme prejudice.
Besides, the province survives on the oil industry. How the heck are they running out of money?

'The character first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939).'
I think we can, therefore, safely say that this backwater Turkish village had plenty of chances prior to this to take this to court.
Of course, part of me has to grin a bit at the idea that the 'suing people for money' idea is no longer specific to America.
