Damn...I went to see Paranormal Activity last Thursday and I have to say, that movie scared the piss out of me. I enjoyed the living hell out of it. Light on at night, three night sin a row! Hasn't happened since Alien or Fire in the Sky, and even then I slept soundly after an hour or two. But what really amazed me about the movie was the ocean of nay-sayers who have yet to see it yet proclaim from on high that it's, and I quote, "stoopid."
Scary movie that scares. What else do you want from it? And the hype is part of the experience. It's like all the kids in your small town saying a particular house is haunted. Wouldn't be too scary if you thought it was a normal house, would it? So yeah..(puckers lips and spouts a raspberry)...it's a good movie and I look forward to Area 51 putting me into an institution.

They should make a movie about people scaring themselves as they make a scary movie about scared people who really are scared but they think it's fake. Yeah, fake in a scary way but not fake.

Maybe its just a shit door!! Or the ghost of Kubrick. Im going to lock you in Steven until you can come up with something better than the crap that was A.I.
@omgwtflolbbqbye: As a film I like it, but taken as an experience at the time, with all of the viral websites, it blew my (still reasonably young) mind. I don't doubt it could've been better, but as is it's one of the more interesting films of the turn of the century.
I saw an interview with stephen sommers ,
he made apoint a the internet ,no matter the subject is 90% negative . No matter what it is .
I`ll see avatar opening day , and theres 95% positive that I`ll enjoy it .
I hate that the poster says "James Cameron's Avatar". To me, the message is (if you include the partially negative/not-as-wetpantied-as-expected responses on Comic-Con) "We're sorry if it is not what you expected, but it's just a single person's whackjob", which is quite negative, it's like they're already doing a step back.
James Cameron is not THAT great that adding his name to the movie's title guarantees anything but a well-produced, albeit quite default Hollywood blockbuster.. he's not Kubrick.
@Milosz Derezynski: I believe he is adding his name to avoid confusion with AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER film coming out next year. That being said, he is the man who gave us THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, and THE ABYSS. He deserves some recognition.
Over the last few years I've been seeing a trend: movies come out, are critically praised and are great movies all around. And then, about a year later, all of a sudden it's being compared to crap.
For example, when Transformers came out, I remember seeing consistent reviews of 90% or higher, and a little while later, "Yeah, it was all sunsets and explosions, too much Michael Bay, blargh". Live Free or Die Hard was, for a short time, a worthy addition to the franchise; and then it was a bit of an embarrassment that tried too hard with its technobabble.
And now I see this quote about The Dark Knight-- "the structure of the movie and the machismo nihilism... both frustrating".
@The Squid: This is just the latest manifestation of "it's not cool to like what everyone else likes," I'd say.
I think some geeks are so anxious to nitpick that they are impossible to please. In many cases, they become determined to dislike things before they ever see them. Discussing how terrible x, y, or z will be is some weird bonding ritual where they moan and whine to each other, consigning the movie to the flames before it's even in production. There was never a chance that that segment of people would be happy with anything, no matter what.
In other cases, this same segment likes something until it becomes more popular in the mainstream. Then it's immediately crap. I think that's the case with the Dark Knight.
This puts geek movie critics in a bad spot. Say they saw the Dark Knight and they judged it on its own merits and called it good. The vocal minority of haters who can never be pleased has a cow. The critic ends up being dubbed a sell-out who fellates the mass media if he or she liked that Warner Bros drivel. So, he or she retroactively applies a bunch of derogatory big words to a second review of the movie to sound edgy and independent. People like you and me are like, "dude, what does that even mean?" The haters are like, "RIGHT ON, you're legit again. Fight the man!"
@The Squid: When Transformers came out, idiots gave it "consistent" 90% scores, and sensible people hated it passionately and rightly. I don't know where you got the idea that somewhere a year later the opinion flipped around, but the only reviewers who gave it really good reviews were George McStudiowhore from Vanity magazine. Or Tobias Hinkleberrybottom from the Idaho Potato Small Town Chronicle.
And Die Hard 4 was pretty much ONLY enjoyed by people who in fact, didn't see Die Hard 1 or 2. The franchise fans hated die hard 4. Critics didn't mind it though. From what I remember, it did well enough.
I don't know what you're basing this on, other than maybe you're just talking to your friends, and then assuming that your friends represent the whole of society?
@Pope John Peeps II: When Transformers came out, every movie theatre website that I saw posted averaged rankings of 90% or higher. The current Rotten Tomatoes ranking is 57%.
As a quick, non-scientific experiment, I looked at the first 3 and last 3 pages of Rotten Tomatoes reviews for Transformers and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Lo and behold, both films had more positive reviews shortly after release than they do more recently.
@The Squid: Yes, but why not look at which reviewers those ARE. Chances are it's always the same kind. The studio-friendly reviewers get their shit out there first as part of the marketing strategy for the movie. All the reviewers I regard as sensible, whose opinions I trust thought it was garbage.
And besides, all those reviews come in within days of each other. Each of those reviewers has come to a totally separate opinion of the movie. It's not like Roger Ebert is waiting 3 months to post his review of transformers.
People forget that no one, not even George Lucas, thought Star Wars would be a blockbuster, everyone involved was hoping it would make back its budget. It was successful because it was released shortly after both the Watergate scandal and the fall of Saigon. The American public needed cheering up. What better way than an idealistic fairy tale set in outer space about a young farmboy, a dashing pirate, a princess, and a Wookie going toe-to-toe against an evil Empire and giving them a whooping? "
Total B.S. Star Wars was and is a hit because it was a good movie. Dark Knight was a hit because it was a good movie, not because it was serious, Srar Trek was a hit because it was a good movie, not because it was upbeat instead of dark and serious.
@SpaceRon: I never Star Wars wasn't a good movie. If you could read you would realize that. Yet, George Lucas has said several times that he was surprised by its success. If you go back and look at the history of cinema, before Star Wars the movies released in the 1970s were largely dark, cynical, and violent. Star Wars was a joyous expression of childhood fantasies released at the right time.

Tell me, Ms. Woerner, where did you study grammar? Was it at the generic Brooklyn gangster school of style?
2.Someone please tell Oren Peli that it is impossible to approach Area 51 without being shot to death by security.

Don't forget Terminator 2: Judgement Day!
(The film that's brought up most often for "How To Do A Sequel Right 101".
Of course, Piranha 2 we also show as "You Have To Fail Sometimes To Succeed Later 101" too. XD )
