5 Things I Learned About Women From The James Bond Books |
11/15/08
Bond did not hate women, indeed he loved at least a few. Vesper, Tracy, and yes, his "scottish treasure" May. Yes, he used women on occasion, but this was, again, part of the character.
As to anti-gay sentiments, these were common at the time, and this was accurately reflected by the dialogue, especially in the "locker room" atmosphere of man to man discussions. Many of the other sexual attitudes brought up in this post have at least a tiny grain of truth, although not nearly as clear cut as stated by Fleming's characters.
The Bond books were set in a rough and tumble world of men (1950s men, no less), and I would hate to see the horrible monstrosities that would result if they were rewritten with PC attitudes from 50 years in the future, especially if they were written for the hard-core liberal feminist in mind.

What does this have to do with anything having to do with this site?

Well, I can't really say I'm surprised; never actually read a Bond book myself, but it makes sense.
Usually in the transition between book and film, a lot of the book's content is scrapped.
I mean, hell, has anyone actually ever read Stephen King's It before? There's a whole section on 12-year-olds losing their virginity to each other. Pretty graphically done, too.
