The third movie in the Twilight Saga, Eclipse, will be on the big, big screen. Which means giant Bella lip biting, hot puppy fight action and abs as far as the eye can see.

The director for the third film, David Slade (30 Days of Night), will have to tackle the tricky plot details which are an all out vampire war with the red-headed Victoria, played by Bryce Dallas Howard who replaced the original actress from the first two films. Should be interesting to watch this all happen on a giant screen, but that also means giant drama sessions as Bella is still stuck in this wolf/vamp love triangle. And nothing says IMAX fun like a nice long talk about love between to teenagers, one in jean shorts.

<![CDATA[Imax Transformers Screening Will Have Additional Robot Fights To Confuse You With]]> Michael Bay's preferred method of watching robot fights is IMAX, all the way. Why? Because he added special scenes to his Transformers movie just for the ginormous screen. "I created a slightly longer cut with more robot fighting." Bay told fans on his message boards. "Four scenes were shot on IMAX cameras, so the screen will fill the full IMAX screen for these scenes." For those of you who are already completely confused by the transforming bits on each Bay Bot, the IMAX screening should ensure that your mind snaps completely. Still, could be cool to see Optimus Prime in his full glory before an on screen explosion causes you to slip into a coma. [Shoot For The Edit]

<![CDATA[Iron Man 2 To Be In 3D And Imax And Maybe Give Back Rub, Too]]> How can Marvel Studios build on the success of this summer's second-biggest superhero movie? Well, if you listen to Iron Man's director, the ambitious and excitable Jon Favreau, the answer is to make its sequel into the kind of movie that will overwhelm you with its visuals. Because they'll not only be in your face, they'll also be bigger than your house.

Speaking at a press conference for the DVD and Blu-Ray release of Iron Man, Favreau talked about what he'd like to do to make the sequel much more impressive than the original, if money was no object:

I would love to do some of it on Imax for Imax. It's all a matter of dollars and cents for them. I would also love to do 3D... because 3D because, just think of the hub, think of the virtual space and what that would be like, the layers. How what fun that would be. And it also drives people to see it in the theater, it makes that much more of an experience. But it all comes down to how much does it cost, and what they get for it.

As to what we can definitely expect from the sequel, Favreau admitted that Dark Knight can own the dark and brooding "side of the playground"; the next movie will keep the light tone of the original movie, but may build off of the storyline from Matt Fraction's enjoyable Invincible Iron Man comic - which may mean that, before we get to the Mandarin (who we'll get to see, eventually), we may be seeing the Iron Man technology being reverse-engineered by terrorists out to destroy Tony Stark's business as much as the man himself. Even without the seeing a giant Iron Man fly off the screen, that alone will get me to be first in line when Iron Man 2 appears in 2010.

<![CDATA[The Dark Knight To Become An Annual Event?]]> Now that The Dark Knight has broken another box office record and become the highest-grossing first run Imax movie ever, theater-owners are wondering what to do for a follow-up. They've come up with what they think is a pretty good suggestion: More Dark Knight.

Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Imax Filmed Entertainment chief Greg Foster explained that The Dark Knight has finally overtaken The Polar Express in terms of box office - a movie that is re-released to Imax screens every holiday season. Would Foster like to see a similar thing happening for Batman's latest adventure?

"That sounds like a really great idea," the Imax exec said. "Ultimately, it's a decision that Warner Bros. has to make. We'd certainly support that."

Warners distribution president Dan Fellman said there was "a real possibility" of such a re-release. Imax's imminent conversion of many of its venues to digital distribution would make cost considerations of such a move more negligible, though Fellman stressed nothing regarding an eventual "Dark Knight" re-release has been decided.

It could be the new way to celebrate the holidays! Trim the tree, wrap the gifts, go and see a nihilistic movie about the sacrifices a superhero makes for his city. Who could resist?

<![CDATA[In The Battle Between 3D And IMAX, We All Lose]]> Now that Dark Knight director Chris Nolan has boasted about shooting his bat-epic on IMAX how many will follow in his footsteps and make movies for the big boy screen? Flight Of The Dragon has announced that it will be going the way of the Bat and filming the live-action dragon flick in 4K resolution for IMAX release. And while it's not particularly scifi, everyone knows that once you get the dragons, zombies and superheroes are never far behind. But with the rise of Avatar and other 3D scifi epics (who also combine IMAX screenings with their 3D techniques) are we about to see a rift between 3D and IMAX technology, as Nolan seems to think? More importantly, is storytelling going to take a backseat to 3D and IMAX whizbangery?

In an interview with Superhero.com, Nolan expresses his disinterest in the 3D craze:

I’m interested in the massive canvas, seeing that larger-than-life canvas that IMAX gives you, and you create a massive quality by the clarity and the size and brightness of the images. So that gives you a great physical sense, like you would get in a 3D movie, but it doesn’t diminish the scale of it. So you’re still dealing with a huge, larger than life canvas, that I think is the best way to use that format. I also hate wearing those glasses.

Charlotte Huggins, the producer of Dragons and also producer of 3D pictures Journey to the Center of the Earth and Fly Me to the Moon called the change a challenge. "4K [IMAX] is the next challenge ... and the special venue really pushes the envelope," she said.

How many other producers and directors will be abandoning 3D craze and hefting the massive cameras required to shoot a film in 4K.

James Cameron is still intent on playing in both sides of the pool. Never officially stating that he will be releasing Avatar on IMAX but still hinting at the possibility.

So what will happen to our dear little indie house theaters? Will they go the way of the Drive-In making ways for massive IMAX screens and a plethora of strained necks, bad backs and headaches formed by overstimulated corneas? Gone will be the days of pre-drinks before the movie. Have you ever tried to watch an IMAX movie after a bottle of red? Not a good idea.

<![CDATA[The Dark Knight Will Walk Tall In IMAX]]> You'll really want to see Batman: The Dark Knight in an IMAX theater next summer, judging from this new featurette. Christopher Nolan filmed four sections of it using fancy IMAX cameras that will create a tall, sweeping canvas. Also, there's a rumor that a prequel to The Dark Knight will appear before I Am Legend in IMAX theaters. And it might be in 3D.
