I'm not saying thats the only reason its doing well but its definitely something in its favour...

October for "Up"?? How does that make any sense? The Pixar movies here are always during the vacations from school so the kiddies can see them -- summer and Christmas. Have you at least gotten "Monsters vs. Aliens"?

"OMG why can't American films be more like foreign films, they're so much smarter and more important!"
Screwwww that. Sure some of them are, but half the time you just think they are more clever than they really are. I mean hell, these foreigners are the same ones who put random English phrases like "Super Sport Fantastic" on a thick crew neck sweatshirt just to be like us!

My guess is the movie didn't do so great in America because all the sci-fi fans (like me) shed money back-to-back for Wolvrine, then Star Trek, yet needed a few weeks to recover financially before shedding more for Terminator--but they will.

This movie does well internationally because the dialogue is terrible (which makes it easy to dub or read in subtitles in foreign markets), and there isn't a lot of it, which makes it easy to just focus on the explosions and stuff.
It's the same reason why Star Trek is not doing well internationally. Cleverly written dialogue does not translate well, the charm of the movie is lost. Well, that and the fact that Star Trek has always been an American phenomenon.

but you are right. this movie died because of the mouth to mouth. people who have nothing better to do that complain about how bad a movie is but how much better it could have been if the story would have been drawn from their own basement script.
i just say this to people who complain about plot, chairs and skynet human interface:
"since terminator 1 terminators have had teeth, and they never bit anyone" :P

Mindless 'splosions and fight scenes travel around the world, and any dialogue problems are either fixed in dubbing or excused by the translation.
If T4 had been made in, say, Germany or Italy, the story, plot, etc. would have been forgiven when dubbed into American.
Except maybe the heart thing.

As for the other countries, I believe that they simply translated an entirely different script.

about bad taste there is no lower standar than the american public for movies. there are more knowledgeable movie people yes but the audience as a whole is not the best, not even close. proof of that is how "scary" movies always do great, like romantic comedies and comedies like the mall security guy movie which i dont remember the name even. movies like motorcycle diaries was presented only one day. there will be blood never made any money at all compared to blockbusters. so i could keep going.
@NotArthurPDragon:
mc donals is fast food in the world and not a food group in the nutrition pyramid like in america. further more the large coke is a medium in america. cause everyone knows bigger is better.

And no American over the age of 10 thinks of McD's as yummy gourmet food. It's what you get when you can't find or afford anything better.
I was so happy to get back to the US where food had flavor, veggies were available that weren't boiled to death, and salad greens actually crunched.
(NB: does not apply to Scotland, where the veggies were equally anemic, but the rest of the food was tasty)

Okay, ban me for dissent now.
